colace stool softner...name brand...can't crush...swallow or get generic???

OK, so I have the name brand Colce stool softner. It appears to be a very firm gel type pill. I'm not going to be able to crush postop. Can I take it as is? Or...Is there another generic which can be crushed or better absorbed whole??

Trust me - you don't EVER want to taste the slimy liquid that is inside that gel cap. Think positive - maybe you won't even need it post-op. Having said that - I swallow them as is - never had a problem. But - I wouldn't take anything post-op - unless I checked with my surgeon first. So this may be a question to put on the list for your surgeon. Good luck!

OR... you can try MIRALAX... or you can even go into Rite Aid or CVS stores or Wal Mart Even and get their brand... its a Powder that looks like sugar... and I put like just 1 Teaspoon in my morning coffee and it just dissolves (you can dissolve it in ANYTHING) AND no taste at all... NOTHING! and it works like a charm! you can even ask your DR or your NUT and im sure they will say OK...

I would recommend having miralax on hand to take if needed.

Bridget- Colace does make a suppository, if you must go that route. Hopefully you won't!

I take that brand. I swallow two every day (whole) as a preventative measure. Otherwise, I have problems. My surgeon said anything smaller than a dime was fine (and these are very small). Good luck!

I know you can either get ther liquid form (may be harder to find) or in the hospital, we sometimes use a large bore needle and syringe and suck the liquid out....don't know how it tastes since we usually put it down PEG tubes. Miralax might be a better option.
