Heightened suicide risk after weight-loss surgery
you have such a way with words, that while you are always informative and honest, you are also encouraging and positive. It is all about the way information is delivered. Thanks for this post, I really appreciate your words, and your candor.
I can't wait to read your book some day!

Own your own thoughts... if it scares you, say it scares you instead of attacking the messenger, as it were.
If you take issue with the article itself, go blast Reuters for publishing it!

BUT!
If Nik told you in that same post that she was suffering with Reactive Hypoglycemia, Seizures of Unknown Origin, EEE, ADD, OCD, Cancer of the toenail, digestive disorders and Leprosy, because they were maybe side effects of her weight loss surgery, you'd not support her.
If she simply OFFERED you a medical STUDY? She's not good enough to post it.
But, if Nik put her professional writing skillz AROUND that article, and BUBBLE WRAPPED IT FOR YOU? She's GOOD ENOUGH to post for you?
May I have your message posting rules, written, stapled, and delivered to my house?

My psych eval was 5 minutes long.
There are countless posters who have similar stories. Many of which should NOT have passed an eval to have major surgery done to them as they don't even know what KIND of surgery they were having! I could name a few of the fruitcakes on this board that are in obvious need of additional psych assistance.
And then we can look at the massive psych issues after -- bulemia, anorexia, cross-addictions, alcoholism, drug addiction, etc, etc.
Wanna scare the newbies? Cause those of us who have been around awhile really could. It's called the unvarnished truth.

I don't find this surprising at all. Most people become obese because they have issues of some kind. I would guess that more than a few expect that losing weight will fix all their problems. The changes that take place both physically and emotionally after weight loss can be staggeringly hard to manage even at the best of times. I personally think therapy should be required during the preparation for surgery and throughout the weight loss process.
And, to answer MM's question...well, yes, I do feel the poster has a way of intentionally posting things just to scare newbies. This is just one of many I have come across that are pretty obviously suggestive. It's one thing to inform, but it's another to repeatedly...well, I am not going to get into that, I am a nicer person than this, and I don't go on these boards to cause friction, or to view extremely negative posts. That is why I spend most of my time on the LW board. I wish everyone on here could be as nice, supportive, and informative as that group. Don't get me wrong, I have gotten a lot of info from the RNY forum, but there can be some very negative posts here.
And no, I think there are a very rare few people who go into this surgery with rose colored glasses, thinking everything is going to be pretty and magical and fix everything that ails them. If they do, then they have not done their research, and don't/didn't have a very good surgeon. But, it's not your job to scare the hell out of them with minute rareties of suicide, and RH, and seizures, and gosh knows what else. While I truly feel for you, MM, for what you go through, you have to know that what you experience is not the norm, but rather the exception. I do hope though, that some day they will be able to find a cure for what ails you. Or atleast a med to help control it.
