burning in stomach - week post op
I am a week post op, the past few days have been feeling great but starting this afternoon I started getting a burning feeling in my stomach. It's getting painful. I'm still on a liquid diet, haven't added anything new today. Been doing good with getting water & protein drinks down.
Anyone have any ideas?

Were you put on a PPI? Nexium and Prevacid come in disolvable tablets and need to be taken for the first month while you can't swallow regular pills. Once you can swallow regular pills, you can go on any of the PPI's - nexium, protonix, prevacid or prilosec. These need to be taken for a minimum of 6months to a year and some surgeons say for life. You have a new pouch that needs to be protected from acid to avoid reflux and ulcers.
I do not know if it is the same thing but about a week post op for me I started getting a stabbing burning pain on the left side of my stomach. Dr said it was muscular. That the big muscle they have to cut to get to stomach has to be sewn back together with Lg stiches and that is the pain I am feeling. Mine is terrible. Moving walking etc is a trial. The only relief I get is if I put pressure on that area. I could not take the celebrex they prescribe after surgery because of an allergy and I think that the celebrex is for this problem. I finally called the Dr yesterday and thought I would have to go to the emergency room but he told me to start taking 600 mg od Motrin 3 times a day. I wish they could have told me this when I called about this last week. Felt a little better last night but is back this am. Otherwise I feel great just wish I could get up and get moving. So so frustrating!!!
I am four weeks post op. Last week while on pureed foods I had the exact same burning you are having. I saw the doctor on Friday and told him about it. I told him I felt like I was starving, like my stomach was empty. He agreed it was time for solid foods and also recommended I start taking prilosec just as a preventative measure. When I came home and made myself some egg salad and had 4 crackers with it, the burning and horrible pain I was in disappeared. I started the prilosec the next day and am just taking it as a precaution but once i started eating real food the pain went away and hasnt come back. Dont take any meds without talking to your doctor, they know whats best. I hope its just hunger.
Hello,
Burning in Stomach + 1 Week PostOP = Contact Surgeon and let him know.
Your surgeon is relying on you to provide him/her with feedback on how your body is doing after surgery. Anything that is progressively getting worse or more painful should be brought up.
Don't schedule an appointment, call and ask what you should do. If you cannot reach your surgeon, contact the surgeon on call. If you cannot reach that person, consider the ER.
I'm not saying what you are experiencing is serious. But even serious conditions start with smaller symptoms.
Be safe. :)

Thank you everyone for all of the feed back, it is so greatly appreciated. I actually ended up going to the Emergency Department. The burning got so bad I was folded over in pain & I started vomiting (nothing came up but burps & foam).
Blood tests were done, x-ray & a scan was done, after all the results came back it was determined that the stomach acid backed up in to my pouch and was burning the part of my pouch that had the incision.
It was partly my bad, I was so worried about my liquid & protein intake I totally spaced & forgot to take my pepcid 2 times a day for the first week. I was down for the count yesterday, but feel great today. My surgeon increased my pepcid & also has me taking Mylanta.
Moral of the story DO NOT forget to take your acid reducer!!!! :) lesson learned.
