Parent or spouse able to stay the night at hospital?
I asked this on my local forum to see if I could get any info on my hospital, but I was wondering what most hospitals seem to allow.
My parents live almost 2 hours away from where I'll be having surgery. My mom really wants to be able to stay the night with me the first night so that she can put cold washcloths on my forehead if needed, be there when the surgeon does rounds first thing in the morning, and so on. She's not expecting a cot, just a chair so she can stay by my side. I may be 30, but she doesn't want to be far away from her baby girl after I've had surgery!
My step dad had a stroke 3 years back, and one of the nurses said she could not stay the night, but he was in the ICU. What has been the experience with most of you here? Is a close relative able to stay the night if they wanted?

Dunno, we never even asked! I wanted Hubbins to sleep well and he would have never been able to do that in the room with me. Nurse's in every few hours, CNA's and god knows who else. If it wasn't for the morphine drip I would have never gotten any sleep!!
I will live each day in the mindful present

It depends on the hospital and whether or not you will have a private room. The hospital I used will not allow family to spend the night if the patient is in a shared room (because it violates the privacy of the other person in the room and may make that person very uncomfortable).

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
DH was allowed to stay with me at the hospital. He slept on my couch.
He was a lifesaver. He helped me get in and out of bed to go to the bathroom so that I didn't have to call the nurses all the time. I think they appreciated one less person to worry about.
He went home the first night I was in the hospital (just as well, I was pretty loopy). My parents stayed in the hotel room we had reserved.
I would call the hospital and ask. Our hospital was fantastic.

Will you have a private room? if so, most likely you can have someone stay with you. The hospital that I had mine at has their own wing for WLS patients and we all had our own private rooms and were allowed to have someone stay over, so my boyfriend stayed with me. Just contact the hospital that you're having your surgery at and they will tell you.
