Around both ankles I have a strip of what looks like tanned skin (but it isn't ). It'a about 2" wide. Ankles feel a little numb sometimes too.

My PCP doesn't know - does it ring any bells with anyone out there?

Thanks

Is it all possible that you are dealing with excess skin?  Have you measured your ankles?  I suppose it is possible if you carried a lot of weight and or excess fluid in your lower legs, that you are experiencing skin which has lost its elasticity.

That discoloration is from poor circulation or venous stasis, blood has moved into the tissues of the skin and broken down, causing the dark color.  I have this too and hope that as my weight comes off and I exercise more that the damage I do have eventually fades...

I am a registered nurse and my endocrine doc knew right away what is was...

hope this helps

This is what I was thinking too.  The surgeon I am using was a vascular surgeon prior to specializing in bariatric surgery.  As soon as he saw my legs he told me that's what it was.  He compared it to tattoo ink if I am remembering right.  Also, if I recall, he said that it will go away to some extent, but will also be there.

There are LOTS of things that dark skin around your ankles could be (anything from hyperpigmentation (which can be caused by many things... from vitamin deficiencies to Addison;'s Disease to systemic disorders) to cyanosis to diabetes...  it depends on what kind of darkness it is and what else is going on with it (e.g. is the skin hard and dry or normal texture).

I am surprised that your PCP does not have any ideas... unless, of course, he has already ruled various things out because you have no other related symptoms.
