Sublingual B12 daily or weekly?

My clinic advises us to take a sublingual B12 once a week but it sounds like some of you may be taking one daily.  What do you advise?  I know it's critical to get enough B12 but is it harmful to take too much?

Thanks,
Barbara

I take the B12 daily and the B1 weekly.  (I understand...I am still working on getting all my protein and water).

Here is the thing with B vitamins, we dont store them like we do other vitamins. What we dont use our bodies will get rid of. My doc told me to take one B12 and one B1 weekly. Now, this is just a suggestion. I started having tingling and numbness in my limbs and hands and feet, and felt simply awful. I talked to a friend who had the surgery many months ago and she told me what she took, I was astounded, so I immediately changed my B vitmains and within 24 hours I felt great and normal. I take a b12 sublingual either 1000mg or 2500 mg, dependant upon which bottle I grab, I also take a b1 every day or every other day. Sometimes I even supplement that with a b vitamin sublingual liquid when I am really active. I also got my surgeon to prescribe me the B12 shot once a month and I give it to myself. When I told my surgeon how I changed my B vitamin regiment she commented that yes, some people need it more than others. Now this is in addition to my normal multi vitamins as well. I also take a carbonyl iron (Feosol) at night along with a folic acid.
TRY UPPING YOUR B12 and B1, you will feel so much better. I had my RNY on 11/7 and around weeks 3-6 I felt so bad and it was due to my B vitamins not being enough. GIVE IT A TRY, I PROMISE YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!!

Please be cautious with your B12.  Monthly injections AND daily sublinguals could cause problems.  B12 is not harmless and getting too much can be a bad thing.  Also be very careful about self-dosing -- you should be basing your intake on your lab results.

Here's a good read on the topic:  http://wlsvitagarten.com/2009/11/25/b12-overload/

It depends.  Daily works for some, weekly works for others -- it depends on the dose amount and how your body responds to it. Some people can't keep their levels up on daily pills, some don't need as much and only take it once a week.  Personally my body prefers 3x per week to maintain my levels at around 1000 and it took me the whole first year post-op to figure out what my perfect dosing schedule was - I adjusted after each set of labs in the first year until my numbers remained stable where I wanted them.

What are you lab results for B12?  That will answer your question better than anyone here is able to.

Haven't had any detailed labs done yet!  My clinic starts them at 3 months, which I haven't quite reached yet.  I'll know better in a few weeks.

Ok good.  Just stick with your doc's recommendation until you get labs drawn.  B12 can be stored in the body for several months -- so as long as it's checked at the 3 month mark, you'll be fine because you've got some stores available from pre-op absorption.

My doc does not do labs either until almost 6 month post op, so until you know, I would call my doc and ask if it is okay to increase your B1 and B12 levels. My doc was fine with it. If you look at b12 bottles, and B1 bottles it is recommended for "normal" people to take them everyday, now with us being "altered" we also need them everyday BUT, like someone has mentioned, some people need different amounts everyone is different. I happen to work best taken one daily and the monthly shot.  Can your doctor/nutritionist.....

Isn't 1000 kind of low?  When my levels dropped from 2000 to 1200 I was so exhausted I had to increase my dosage.  I always shoot for atleast 1500 and thought that is what most others do to.  My hematologist told me not to worry when I was greater than 2000 either but I did cut it but I do better with high levels.

My levels range from 1000 to 1400.  I only worry if I drop below 1000 but my levels seem to fluctuate from one lab draw to the next, but it remains in the general range.  And no, 1000 isn't low.  The top end of the normal scale is 900... so anything over 1000 is fine for.
