No problem -- Dr. Ara Keshishian.  He posts on OH -- in fact, he made several posts today:

And of course my surgeon.  These two DS surgeons have the courage of their convictions and don't turn down other surgeons' butcheries.

Laura,

How do we know that her insurance even covered the VSG?  Some companies that cover the DS do not cover the VSG because they consider it experimental.

I'm so sorry you've been violated by this hack pretending to be a surgeon; I think you need to get a lawyer and go after him for what he did to you.

I'm a revision from RNY to DS; I had the gastric bypass / RNY done in 1980, so I lived with it for 28 years and know full well what living with RNY is like LONG TERM and I hated it. The people here who are trying to fill you with sunshine and rainbows are all very short term RNY's they have no clue what they're in for LONG TERM. The dumping on anything sweet or rich gets real old after a few years; I would even dump on milk. The food sticking and having to puke it up is also nothing anyone should have to put up with unless they want it. I couldn't eat steak or roast beef unless I chewed it to baby food consistency; I could never eat celery or anything stringy or fibrous; I couldn't even eat rice no matter how much I chewed it. IMO it's the ****s. It really wasn't so bad for the first 5 years or so; but the dumping, food sticking and the deprivation really start to wear on you after awhile and you're young and will have to live with this for a very long time.

The crock about not being able to to the DS because you had some adhesion's is bull **** He either didn't want to spend the time to do it, or he didn't have the skill to do it; in either case it's not your problem and he should not have butchered your stomach because he lacked the ability to do what you wanted. I had adhesion's and scar tissue up the wazoo; my revision took 8 1/2 hours for the first surgery and then another surgery lasting 4 1/2 hours 3 days later. That's what it took to get it done right on me; but then I had a real DS surgeon, not some bait & switch quack like you did. Get a copy of your surgical notes, they will tell you everything that went on and how long it took; I'll bet the SOB wasn't working on you for more than 2 hours.

Sue the sonofa***** for everything he's got and hopefully no one else will have to be butchered by this quack.

OMG... what a nightmare!   I am 4 weeks out from my lapband to DS revision and I would have DIED/KILLED it I woke up with the RNY.

My doctor and I discussed possibilities if my previous surgery made it difficult to do the DS.  But at no time did my c-section, appendix removal, lower abdominal hernia repair (with mesh), open hysterectomy, or other various female surgeries come into the conversation.   We mostly focused on the lap band and the pyloric stenosis repair I had as an infant.  Both on the stomach itself.

Our plan was that if all he could do was remove the band that was it.  No revision to anything else.  The insurance approval was for removal of the band and conversion to DS.  We even had to get approval to remove the gall bladder, just in case.  He left it in, but had to have the approval before he could do anything.

What did your insuance company approve?    They will fight paying for something else.  If he slid it in under a generic code, he might be covered, but I doubt it.

My recommendation is to get copies of your whole file.  Every paper you filled out stating you wanted the DS, every paper/authorization you signed and go thru it to make sure that you did not accidently sign something that gave him permission.

Then after I punched my husband... I would consult a lawyer, or file a complaint with the medical board at the least.

FIrst off -- I'm terribly sorry.  Waking up expecting one thing, being told you were given another thing must have been a huge shock.  I mean, waking up in pain is bad enough, but then to be told all of this?  Unthinkable.

But then to be told it was "consented" by your husband -- someone who probably did not understand the differences between the two surgeries because he didn't study the surgeries like you have, didn't understand the life changes the two surgeries entailed.. must have been devastating as well.

I know you are torn between "do I sue?  do I not?"  because you're still trying to heal.  I get that.  You're also trying to make sense of healing after massive rearrangement of your guts.  It hurts, it's hard to get in your vitamins, your fluids, your walking, etc.  Adding in "did my doctor **** me over on purpose and lie to me?" takes energy you just don't have right now.

Today.  Right now.  You have an RNY.  Whether or not you keep it or have it revised down the road -- that's down the road.  Do what you can with what you have right now to get strong enough to fight if that's what you decide to do.  And if you decide to fight, I guarantee you that the DSers will be behind you 110% in that fight to help you get the surgery you wanted in the first place.  Until that point, you have the RNY board standing behind you to support you with the surgery you have right now.

Take care of yourself, physically, emotionally, and legally.

But yeah, I'd be pissed all to effing hell if this were done to me, and my husband would be chewed out from here to next Christmas if he had consented to a surgery without knowing the difference.  That's not informed consent.

I have to agree with Sue here. You need to gather all your medical records from the hospital in their entirety and do some research for yourself. IMO your Dr. was wrong.

I'm confused did Dr. Ferrari tell you WHY scar tissue would interfer with with DS and not the RNY......I'm not sure this makes much sense.

I'm not doubting and I'm sorry this happened to you......I'm just puzzled it doesn't add up.

I was told by California Mom of 2 that when the surgeon realized the problem with the scar tissue,  the surgeon called her husband and her husband gave consent to do the RNY. I don't see where Cailfornia Mom of 2 posted that information. It's an important fact in this situation. I'm not a lawyer, but, it would probably change any legal ramifications quite a bit.

Have a great day!
