Hello All;

I am new to this forum and I must say that I am happy to come across hundreds of you folks out there that have been or will be in my position. I know I am not the only one out there that have struggled with weight issues.

I had the gastric surgery done on Nov 30th, 2009. First..my procedure was scheduled for the Duodenal Switch..but once going in, my doctor found scar tissue from my previous pregnancies and thought there might be a more risk..so he did the gastric instead. Admittingly I am quite disappointed with this....a number of reasons, but just because this was not what I signed up for. (Mainly I was not expecting the end result , but was told that the results would be the same. I still cannot get it out of my mind that I did not get the requested surgery and I hope that the pounds will still come off!)

Anyhow..I am feeling really down..because I weigh myself and I only lost 14 lbs since the surgery. I was never expecting fast results...but I am missing food already. Taking the vitamins twice a day is a struggle for me; since I have never taken them before. I miss the taste of food! But not craving it..I don't know how to explain it. But I am sure you understand!

Anyhow..my goal weight to lose is over 120 lbs. I am currently at 258lbs. I just hope that the procedure will be worth everything! I did not expect to feel this way after surgery...maybe it did not help that I stepped on the scale this morning and gained 1 lb! what the heck is that?

*sigh*..i got a long struggle ahead and it has not even been a week!!

Welcome. And hugs.

At my 2 week appointment I had only lost 12 lbs (and it was actually 3 weeks post op)

That was 155 lbs. ago. So take heart. It takes time but it will happen. I always say this and don't take it the wrong way but it took us our whole lives to get fat...it SHOULD take a while to get small. There is so much emotional change you have to go through to even be ready to be your smaller self that it is actually a good thing that it takes a while.

But let me reiterate. It will happen. Take care of yourself. Follow your surgeon's guidelines. And become a part of this community. We saved a seat for you. See --> it's right there! And I made you a yummy protein shake, take a sip! (Smiles)

Welcome. We look forward to getting to know you.

I have to ditto what Nik says, take it easy on yourself.  If you follow your program, it will happen and yes, you went in expecting one type of surgery but came out with another, don't be so hard on yourself.  It sounds like it was medically necessary to switch gears.  This is something that we all must consider when we go in for surgery, there may be something arise, beyond our control that dictate something else.  Since you're a bit down in the dumps about it,  join OH and visit the board often, it's a wonderful resource and sounding board.  There is always a seat for you on the losers bench.  Keep your chin up and good luck!

I can see where you may be disappointed but you were given the GOLD STANDARD by having gastric bypass....and gold these days is just AWESOME!!  (Gastric bypass is considered the golden standard of weight loss surgery, out of all the others)

You know what they say when life gives you lemons......."squirt juice in your enemy's eyes"!

Don't dwell on what you don't have but rock what'cha got ~ baby!!

It's still early for massive amounts of weight to drop off...it will happen, you'll see.  Right now your body is dealing with healing and shock from the dramatic loss of calories.  Don't be so hard on yourself.

Take care,
Dawn

Welcome to the loser's bench!  It is a big psychological as well as physical adjustment to life after any WLS.  You're going to do just fine.  The weight will come off, if you follow the plan.  I'm still concerned about getting to my goal, but I'm thrilled to see the weight come off steadily month after month.  My colleagues at work cheer me on almost daily, and friends that haven't seen me in a while are the best indicator of how well this surgery (and my efforts) are paying off.  You should see their reaction to the new slimmer me!  The RNY is a great surgical tool...and you will succeed with it!  Please don't view this surgery as "second best".  There are a lot of proponents of the DS on these forums, and I'm sure that surgery is working well for them.  Likewise, there are many, many successful RNYers who have achieved their goals with this surgery.  Good luck!

Hi California Mom of 2. I'm a California Mom of 4. I grew up in southern CA. and moved from there in 1996.

We also have the same surgeon. Dr. Ferrari is a great surgeon. He really knows what he is doing and is a veteran doing WLS. If he felt the DS was not possible, I'm sure it wasn't. He has many years of experience. I trust his expertise.

The RNY is a great surgery. The weight will come off, but, you have to work your tool. Getting your protein, water and vitamins in is your new job. It definitely beats obesity. Give yourself time to adjust to your new way of life. You can do it, step by step.

The psychological issues are real. I went through bouts of withdrawal feelings. It's normal. The best thing to do is to journal and pray if you feel comfortable doing that. The issues and feelings that caused you to self medicate with food are still there, but now, you don't have food to use to distract, comfort, numb you etc...

I started seeing a counselor and journaling when I needed to, to start addressing the issues that fueled my overeating. I imagine every person who has some type of WLS will have to do the same.

You can and will adjust and succeed. It just takes time. I'll say a prayer for you. Feel free to private message me if you would like someone to talk to.

Take care,

Carolyn

Have a great day!

His blurb says he "specializes" in a number of surgeries including the DS...then his stats say he has done 12.  I wouldn't send my sister's fat cat to a guy who says he "specializes" in something he's done only a dozen of.

He sounds like one of the many "Bait and don't Switch" surgeons.

There are good reasons that a person would choose not to have an RnY and she was robbed of the right to make that decision.

I wonder how many of his 1600 patients who have the RnY were treated to this trick.  They should get together and sue his ass.  He may be good at what he does...but he should be truthful about what he does as well.
