My doctor called my husband to get the consent...and I wasn't too upset but just disappointed. I am not ok with it because I have all this support. And yes; I am more thankful that I was able to get this opportunity...:)

If I were in your shoes, I'd have a lot of mixed emotions. I think it's okay to let yourself feel whatever comes to you. This is a major life change, and was not the change you were expecting. It's only natural to be disappointed that you didn't get the DS. At the same time, it's also normal to be eager to make your RNY work, because that's what you've got.

Whether or not your husband had the right to give consent on your behalf depends in part on what paperwork you signed. I would suggest that you get copies of all your consent forms, just for your own piece of mind. Even if you don't feel like you want to do anything about this now, you never know how you might feel down the road.

My sincere best wishes for a successful journey go out to you.

Your story is shocking. I'm so sorry a surgery you did not authorize was performed on you. Your doctor, no matter how credible, had absolutely NO RIGHT to assume you would want a RNY or any other wls without your INFORMED consent. If you are without a doubt of this happening and you had no prior knowledge this would be a possible outcome, I say sue his 'effing pants right off. Lawyer up immediately. No one knows what your future is going to hold with a surgery you did not want nor asked for. Best of luck to you and again, I'm so very sorry this happened.

DITTO!  And I'd find out if a revision is possible and how soon from an experienced revision surgeon, which, btw, this surgeon you just had should have to pay for - IN FULL plus some!

Good luck!

I get that you're upset about the type of surgery you received - and weren't informed of - but still...you wanted WLS and you got WLS.  I'm sure you signed something somewhere that said if the doctor needed to make an alternative decision to benefit your health (such as performing open instead of lap surgery if it turned out the latter would be too risky).  I know I did.

Don't flame me, but lawyering up is one of the major reasons healthcare is so expensive.  I can see malpractice if the guy sewed your colon to your vagina (which has happened), but this isn't an incompetent mistake.  This surgery is gonna change your life for the better, and didn't you sign on for that?

Stay calm.  Post-op life is gonna suck for awhile, until it doesn't.

Would you still be saying that if she'd woken up with a lap-band?

I'm glad that you think the RNY is going to work for her weight loss, but even if she is 100% completely successful with the gastric bypass, it DOES NOT NEGATE the fact that she got a surgery completely different from the one she wanted.  No consent.

I don't give a crap if he gave her magic unicorn powers while he was in there too--she WANTED and ASKED FOR and PREPARED FOR a DS.  That's all there is to it.  His job was to give her that...not something else he thought might also work.

I'm pretty sure her consent for didn't say, "I authorize a 'Weight Loss Surgery'".

Bull****

Fuck-up doctors is a bigger reason.

Or wait...shouldn't we just roll over for doctors because GOD think about how expensive health care is!
