Sue, I don't believe Dr. Ferrari is a bait and switch surgeon.  He's well respected in Houston, my surgeon retired and Dr. F. has agreed to take on all of Dr. Wongsa's patients for aftercare.

Dr. Ferrari is a new DS surgeon so 12 would probably be about right.  I'm not sure I'd choose him for the DS if I was going to be having it......yet just due to the number of surgeries he's performed at this point.

I'm confused as to why scar tissue would affect the DS and not the RNY though, I'd definitely be requesting Dr. Ferrari confirm why.

Don't be discouraged, take it day by day.  I'm 17 months out and it's the best thing I ever did for myself.  My highest weight was 243.5 and I've lost about 70 lbs.  Definitely not the fastest loser but I'm happy where I am.  I still want to lose 20-30 lbs. but I'm not stressing about.

You might want to try chewable vitamins.  I didn't care for the taste but they're easier than swallowing sometimes.

I am off all meds, shop in the petite department and have way more energy.  I feel at least 20 years younger.

Come here for encouragement.

PATIENCE GRASSHOPPER!

I am only a month out from my RNY and I have lost almost 30 lbs.

My first week out, I had not lost much but I was also still fairly swollen and dealing with a lot of gas. Maybe your are too?

That first week home, it seemed like every other commercial was a food commercial from one of many restaurants that I liked to frequest...and everyone one had a special. But I would just keep watching TV sipping my water. In due time, I may be able to have some of those things again, but right now, Im just focused on healing and getting my protein, vitamins, and fluids in. That's our main job right now.

I promise you, each day gets easier. In stead of focusing on what you are missing, thing about your new future...the things you will get to do that you had not down before, smaller size, being more active....that's what I do.

Take your time and take care of yourself. This is an awesome website and in no way are you alone in your journey.

Psalms 94:14 In the multitude of my (anxious) thoughts within me, your comforts cheer & delight my soul!

Don't be disapointed.  There are many people out there who would love to have the opportunity that we have been given.  Those of us who need to lose around 100 pounds generally do lose at a slower rate.  I have lost 52 pounds since I started (some was pre surgery).  I generally lose 1-4 pounds a week.  To some that might seem like a small amount BUT pre-surgery I was only able to lose 1/2 a pound a week no matter how diligent I was.  On the weeks when I don't lose any weight ( it fluctuates up and down 1-3 pounds) I find that my clothes are still getting bigger.  Even at a slower rate you will be suprised at how much your life changes.  I have gone from a size 2X top to a large/medium and from a size 18 pants to a 10.

When people look at me they never would have guessed I had over 100 pounds of excess weight, so now when I tell them I have lost about 1/2 of what I need to they tell me that I don't need to lose another 50 pounds.  When i tell them my curent weight they don't believe me.  You too will have that same success.

Don't dispare, in a few weeks you can eat out again - you can make proper choices off the menu and still enjoy the experience.  Give it time and you will see that it works.

THE WEIGHT LOSS WILL COME BE PATIENT....ONE THING THAT I DIDNT DO WAS WEIGHT MYSELF DAILY.... IT WAS BETTER FOR ME TO JUST CHECK ON MY WEIGHT LOSS AT THE DOCTORS SINCE I GO THERE EVERY TWO WEEKS OR SO TO GET MY VITAMINS AND SHAKES... IT FELT GREAT JUST GOING IN AND EVERYTIME THERE WAS A WEIGHT LOSS...AND FOURTEEN POUNDS IN A WEEK IS GREAT.... STAY POSITIVE AND DONT STRESS... IT DOESNT HELP WITH THE HEALING... I WISH YOU THE BEST AND YOU'LL SEE THAT IT WILL BE OK

Hi there....I would say 14 lbs in only 5 days is INCREDIBLE!  I had my surgery on Wednesday, just two days after you, and haven't seen any loss on my scale yet.  I know that at the hospital they pump you full of IV fluid so it takes a while for your body to shed that.  I go to the doctor for my 1 week post op on Tuesday and I'm hoping to see a slight loss by then.  :)

In regards to having the RNY rather than the DS like you were expecting...I wouldn't get so down about that.  I talked to my doctor about the two and while he agrees that the DS can be very beneficial for some people, it's not his prefered surgery.  He said the malabsorption from the DS worries him quite a bit.  My doctor was the 2008 president of the ASBS (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery), he's considered THE best of THE best and doctors from all over the country come to learn from him.  Anyways...he does all of the surgeries (so it's not like he's just trying to sell one to his patients) and he considers the RNY to be the best choice for most patients.  You'll get the best results with the least amount of negative impact.

Anyways...I would say, don't be so hard on yourself!  Take it day by day and be positive!

Good luck!

(((HUGS)))  I think most of us have probably gone through a hard time with missing food, missing the AMOUNT of food we used to be able to consume, etc. post-surgery. Double that with having to wake up to a different surgery outcome, and it's not surprising that you're upset and having some bad feelings. The weight WILL come off. It will. Follow your guidelines, drink/eat your protein, limit your carbs, exercise, and it WILL come off. Best of luck to you. :)

I had surgery on Dec 1st and no regrets at all.  First piece of advice - put the scale away.  You have to consider how much fluids and stuff they pumped into you to do the surgery and the few days after.  Thats a lot of weight right there.  If you freak out over every little pound you are going to have a very rough road ahead.  Your weight can vary 2-4 pounds from weighing in the morning or even in the afternoon.  That is normal. Give yourself some breathing room and try not to be so hard on yourself.  As long as you do what you are supposed to do and learn to use the tool you have been given you will do just fine.  I am struggling too with the wanting to eat part but I know physically even if I did try - there's no way I could.  I am doing good to eat a half cup of soup at this point.  Its a struggle every day to get my liquids in and getting all my protein in is impossible right now.  I just do the best I can and my goal at this point is to do better today than I did yesterday.  That goal will stay the same from now until I can meet all the requirements of protein intake and fluids.  Do I miss food? Some - to an extent.  I see things on tv and smell things in the house that others are cooking and I am envious but its the head hunger that is talking.  Even though I know it would taste good and I would like to have it - I know I cant.  I keep telling myself that this is temporary - Im on liquids until Wednesday.  So right now I am just getting through until Wednesday to mushy foods.  Then from there it will be about learning to eat again only in a better way. This is why I had wls - to relearn to eat and to live a healthier life.  Keep your chin up and keep your goal in mind.  You will be able to have food again - just in smaller amounts, in healthier selections and you will find things that will make you happy to eat again.  Hang in there - it gets better.

Californiamom,

I also started out with a goal of losing 120 lbs.  With exercise and my RNY, I achieved this goal in 8 months.  If you look at it like this way by next summer you will be at your goal.  Along the road the first month or two is difficult, but after that it is smooth sailing and you will have that happy RNY face on like the rest of us have.  There is nothing better than losing the weight and feeling great.  It comes in time, enjoy the ride.
