RNY in Nov 09 - Check in!

Hello everyone!

Here is our weekly check-in of all the folks having RNY in Nov 09.  Let's see if we can get a master list running.  Please list your screenname plus your surgery date in your reply post.

I am waiting on my pulmonary and cardiac clearance to arrive at the surgeon's office and to be scanned into their system.  I called today but nothing is there--yet.  That's ok since I saw both docs just last week.

How is everyone else doing?  How are you prepping for your surgery?

Take care,

Hi Kelli, I'm Christy.  My surgery date is November 2...WHOA next week woohoo!  I am not on a pre-op liquid diet, but I decided to go on the band wagon with others who are required to be on that liquid diet.

So, in preparation for surgery, I started the liquid diet on Thursday (omg it's terrible LOL).  I bought my bowel prep stuff yesterday.  I've made 2 lists.  The first list is a post op grocery list that I am going to do on Friday.  The 2nd list is what I need to pack.  I live 140 miles away from the hospital, so I actually have to stay in Phoenix with my brother and won't be home for 10 days.  So, I'm packing for that this week.

I've gotten all of my work stuff straight and have made lists of my daily duties for the person who takes over for me.  I've also cleaned my house REALLY well and shampooed my floors so that post-op I will not feel gross about my house.

I've made a "Honey Do" list for my family and friends who will be taking care of me post op.  I don't want to have the questions "What do you need me to do?"  So I've prepared that list to.  Can you tell I'm a LISTER?

Lastly, I've sat with my kids and made sure they don't have any lingering questions about surgery or how things are going to go.  My son lives with his dad in Phoenix, but my daughter lives with me.  I've made arrangements for her to stay with my dad so that she doesn't miss school when I'm gone those 10 days.

Ok sooooo much to do, so little time.  Friday I'm buying all my vitamins and all that stuff.  Anything I'm missing?

Wow Christy, congrats on your Nov. 2nd surgery date!  You sound seriously prepared and have gave me some great suggestions to add to my to-do list!

How old are your children? ..and what are their thoughts on your surgery?

I, too, will be doing the liquid diet one week prior to surgery.  My surgeon said that wasn't really necessary but I could do it if I wanted to.  I figure it can't hurt and I'll give it my best shot!

So here is our list of Nov RNYers...

My daughter is 15 (she just got her permit and is mobile LOOK OUT LOL) and my son is 12.  They both have seen me struggle and are really excited for me.  I actually took them to my pre-op visit with the surgeon and they got to ask her questions.  I was surprised she let them come in.  I told them I couldn't promise she'd see them.  But she did!

She asked how they felt and explained everything that would happen from the time I checked in until I left.  She showed them cartoon pictures of the surgery and told them how they can support me.  She is amazing, I'm so confident with my choice of surgeon!

Wow Christy, your surgeon sounds great!  How cool is that how she explained the process to them?  I also have a 15 and 12 yr old...both girls...plus a 6 yr old boy.  My 6 yr old is too young to "get it" but my girls understand.  I will be bringing them to my pre-op along with my mom.  My surgeon is great and encourages family to attend but I don't think we'll be seeing any cartoon pics! LOL

Hi Nov 9th here, I have pre op testing on wed.  I am  home with 2 sick kids this week so that has put off my plans to focus on getting things set for me.  I am more trying to focus on making sure I dont get sick as well.  Other then that I am very excited for you and can't wait till we are all on the losers bench.

November 23 is the big day here!  I am still in shock that my insurance company actually said yes.

I start a two-week liquid diet on November 9.  That step scares me almost more than the surgery...I don't think I've ever been able to stick to a liquid diet for more than a day or two, and I have some big food-featuring events during that time. I'm also worried that I'll catch the dreaded flu or some other virus between now and then; there's a lot of it going around here and I have kids in elementary school.

To get ready, I've been collecting protein samples and "clear liquids" of various kinds.   I'm trying to get some projects wrapped up and make plans for feeding and entertaining my kids for the days after surgery when I'm pretty sure I won't be up to it.  I'm trying to eat slower, chew more, and experimenting with not drinking during meals (it's hard!).  I need to get some more regular exercise going, too.  And to be completely honest, I've also been enjoying some things that I know I won't be able to have for a long time after surgery, if ever: beer, raw veggies, pasta, Halloween candy, etc.

But mentally, I am so ready to go! Thanks to everyone here from whom I have been learning so much and been so inspired already.

Nov. 4th is my surgery date.  I am excited and a bit nervous.  I have four kids and have to travel about 3 hours for my surgery.  I had a nutrition class last week along with my pre op tests.  Everything went well and no liquid diet for me.  I cant wait to start this journey.

Hi skwiegand, congrats on your 11/4 surgery date!  Glad to hear that your pre-op testing went well!  3 hours is quite a drive but I am sure well worth it!
