crazy confession time

So I live in Buffalo, NY.  Home of the chicken wing.  Yes I said it, chicken wings.  My future in-laws from NYC are on their way, and of course, they want pizza and chicken wings for when they get here.

About a week ago, I was at my parents house hanging out, and they ordered the same...
and then...the worst happened:  I cried.
I friggin cried over food people, and I feel like I may do it again, in front of my future in-laws!  I find it completely amazing and ridiculous how wrapped up I get with food.
Tell me, veterans, does it get easier?  Getting over food?

I am almost three weeks post op now and I'm down about 45lbs.  The success obviously outweighs (har har!) the food, but it's still fricken hard.

Seriously, whoever said WLS was the "easy way out", is full of...well you know what.

Thanks for listening.

No need to cry. Eventually you will be able to enjoy a wing or two. Just keep in mind those 45 pounds gone and that each chicken wing is 100 calories.  When you are in a social situation where eating is involved, remember the focus is the social aspect of the gathering and not the food.   It is hard early out but it does get easier.

Hey Libby,

I was bad last weekend! I had the toppings off a small piece of pizza with cheese, pepperoni and mushrooms cut up really small and chewed well. I dabbed it off with a napkin. I figuresd it was like a melted cheese stick. I also had a small bite of a wing. They were tastey.

I am weak!!

Sorry...not very supportive.

It will get better, I went through the same thing. Remember you are going to be healthy and fit. Its hard I felt alone and separated at family meals alot of the time.  Remember for alot of us we had a very dependant relationship with food...breaking up is hard to do!  This will pass and things will feel normal again.

Don't feel alone.

Three weeks post-op and 45 pounds down?  Great progress!

Anyway, at 18 mos. post-op I can eat anything in moderation, including a chicken wing or two or three.  That said, I still sometimes get depressed when I walk by the hot entree table at my local Whole Foods or wander the aisles of my local Trader Joes encountering all the yummy frozen entrees that I used to devour (Greek yogurt, soy chips and beef jerky don't count!)  Not that I couldn't eat a "moderate portion" of any of what I see; it's just that confronted with such a smorgasbord, "moderation" really isn't the point (and I try to avoid foods that trigger cravings).

I'm not sure if you're a fan of the HBO vampire series "True Blood", but after my last trip to Whole Foods, I felt a bit like a vampire whose only food now is either real blood or the synthetic "True Blood".  It seems that protein shakes are my "True Blood"!

It does get easier,I promise.  You are mourning your freind right now and that will subside the more weight you lose.  I cannot say mine has gone away completely, but it is much more manageable.  I had my surgery one week before Thanksgiving and you talk about hard!  I had to go in the other room and watch TV while everyone else ate, but I survived it and you will to.
Good Luck and keep up the good work.  45 POUNDS IN 3 WEEKS!!!!THAT IS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Girl, I went bat**** on my stepdad over some bacon 3 days post-op. Don't even worry about it.

I can eat wings now. The little wingettes. I don't most times because too many make me feel yucky and I ALWAYS eat too many. But I can enjoy a few.

If it's buffalo wings, you should try Shari's buffalo chicken dip. Let me try and find the recipe and then I'll post it. That stuff gets you over.

Girl, I cried over pizza and ice cream 3 days after surgery.

I'm only 7 weeks out, and it is a LOT better. Chicken is protein! As soon as you are cleared for all food, you can make alternatives or modify things that everyone is eating. Get some chicken and put some wing sauce on it. Eat the toppings off of pizza. I mean, you can't do it all the time, but soon you'll find tasty alternatives such that you can eat with family and friends.

Hang in there. Your loss is amazing!
