Drinking with eating contradictions
So we all have been told.....don't eat after you drink and don't drink with your meals and furthermore don't drink for awhile after you eat a meal.
The reasons I heard is that you may stretch the stoma by pushing the solids through the stoma too fast.
If that is the case then why can we have milk with our cereal, have chicken and veggies in our brothy soups, take pills with water? Isn't this a contradiction?
It's the same thing isn't it?
(For the record........no I am not drinking with my meals and this is no indication of me having a desire to try to talk myself into it)

The main reason for the rule is not about stoma stretching...it's about appetite. We have nothing holding food in our pouches. Liquids wash food out. To stay sated (especially further out) you have to wait a while after eating before drinking. I personally don't wait that long after drinking to eat (maybe 15 minutes or so), but I wait 90 minutes - 2 hours after eating to drink again.

Nope, not a contradiction at all.
** If you eat cereal with milk on it - you ARE drinking with your meal
** If you eat brothy soups - you ARE drinking with your meal
This is where we have to change our mindset and habits to match the rules we have to follow for the rest of our lives. If you have cereal/milk... eat the solids and leave the leftover milk in the bowl (or feed it to the cat). If you are having chicken and veggie soup, eat the chicken and veggies and leave the broth behind. DO NOT drink the milk or broth in these cases. I know... it seems counterintuitive to leave that stuff behind, but we have to focus our eating on dense foods to keep the pouch filled for as long as possible.
Instead mix your cereal with yogurt or eat it plain (if you can afford the carbs, which I usually can't). Or choose a soup that is not broth-based -- like chili, stew or cream soups instead.
PILLS -- that's a totally different topic. There's no rule that says you can't drink water with your pills. The pill won't dissolve in your pouch anyway (no gastric acid), so who cares if it's washed through the pouch and into the intestines right away. No biggie.
DRINKING BEFORE MEALS -- this is the one rule that I really do not understand and can't find any biological reason for it. Our pouch is like a funnel and water just flows right through into the intestines. So why do we have to wait 30 minutes after drinking to start eating? I have no idea. It makes no sense to me at all. So this is one rule I do not follow. I drink right up until the first bite of food.

Thank you!
I was going nuts thinking about this and how I felt it was a contradiction!
How you explained it makes sense. It's my thinking that's wrong. I need to not eat things that way and focus on dense food.
I had wondered about the not eating 30 minutes after drinking too. I usually wait only about 10 minutes or so because I was thinking on the same lines as you. The pouch being a funnel etc. I always wait at least the 30 minutes before drinking after eating. Usually longer if I can.

I never heard this "rule" until I came to the boards. . . this is not a rule as given to me by my doc/nut. 30 minutes after? Yep. Before? Nope.

I LITERALLY just asked my husband that same question this morning. I sat down with a small bowl of fiber one honey clusters, ate the cereal, then drank all the milk that was left over. Then I had an epiphony, didn't I just wash all that cereal down with the milk?? Of course he had no idea, and I still don't either lol.
