I call "bullsh*t" on RNY program nutritionists.

I honestly think that because we apparently didn't give a **** about our health (food, vitamins, supplements) prior to this WLS that they feel we should "just be happy" and cover what they consider their bare minimums. Like we should just be happy to be alive.

Thanks for all the great tips! I am now writing out my vitamin lists. I can't believe I will be going from taking no vitamins to taking a TON of them. LOL. All in good health, I guess!

I feel pretty blessed after reading some of the posts about nutritionists advice. My dietician met with me prior to surgery twice. She had me bring in the vitamins I was planning on taking to make sure they were appropriate. They recommend bariatric vitamins. She also gave me a booklet regarding stages after surgery and food and supplementation. It's sad to see so many people left wondering about such an important aspect of post surgical care.

For right after surgery I was given flinstones and tums. I called BS right away. In my month post op visit I told them that I got an injectable b-12 from my PCP and they looked at me like I was crazy and told me it was totally unnessicary.

I still take it.

I'm curious... for those who are having problems with the advice provided by their programs, was that surgeon's program certified as a Bariatric Center of Excellence?

Yes.  My program is well respected in Michigan with long-time surgeons.  It is a Center of Excellence.  Unfortunately, if you hire people who don't give a damn.... you can't do much about the care they provide.  Or maybe they used to care, but are now burned out and don't bother showing compassion and taking the time to really educate patients?  I dunno...

Taking Children's Chewable Vitamins IS one of my pet peeves about some the of the nutritional information given to WLS patients....

I feel that I was well informed about my post op diet AND suppliments.  One of the sheets I was given gave the brand names and prices for the supplements and locations to get supplements at stores in my area. My surgeon also sells Bariatric Advantage and a Bariatric Formula made by Metagenics.

When I was in the hospital... a hospital NUT came and made sure I knew how much protein I needed per day; the supplements I needed; and went over the food plan for the first 2 weeks after surgery  - until I saw the NUT at my 2 week  appt when I saw the surgeon.  Also in the paperwork was sample menu's for the liquid phase of the diet. The sample menu's did not help me much...since the menu was for 45 to 50 gms of protein ... but I needed 69 to 89 gms (ah the advantages of being tall!).

I will know soon how my supplements have faired for me... since I just had my 6 month check up and the complete labs done (my surgeon doesn't the full lab work up until 6 months).

I am also part the LABS study (Longitutal Assessment Bariatric Study  - or something like this) ... I am hoping that some clear recommendations or guildlines will come out of this study.

I am curious, how tall are you? I am 6'0" and the nut told me to aim for the highest end of the recommendation for women. This would be 60g of protein each day. From my independent research I've been feeling that might be a little low and should be the low end of my goal if anything. Since you seem to have gotten a specific range for your height, I was just curious if you had any thoughts!

Thanks,
Katie

I am only 5'10"... They figured my protein by multipling my  Ideal Body Weight in kiligrams by 1.0 for the low end and 1.3 to get the high end. Per the website below... my IBW is 150.9.

here is a site to figure out your IBW -
