elevated BUN/Creatinine Ratio - anyone experience this
Recently I had some of my labs redone as per my RYN Dr. in part they were showing that I'm dehydrated, but I drink plenty of water so he had me redo that part of the labs. I just got news that the new results are even more elevated, that is the "BUN/ Creatinine Ratio" is off the scale.8-27 is normal and mine is at 34 ,up from 28 last week I'm waiting for my Primary Dr to call me with an ok to see a nephrologist as per my RYN Dr recomended. I had my physical last week wth my primary Dr and I mentioned that I was having a "nagging" kind of pain in my lower back on the right side but it also kind of felt over my hip area I wasn't sure ,now within the last couple days I can tell that its from my back. My be related ? or not. I hate this kind of "waiting"
Thanks for your time.

Your sodium and chlorine are normal.
The BUN/creatinine ratio is high.
BUN ~ 10-20 mg/dL
creatinine ~ 0.5-1.1 mg/dL
The BUN should be about 10 times higher than the creatinine. Meaning, if your creatinine is 1.1, your BUN should be 11.
Are you saying it is 34 times higher? That is indicative of acute renal failure that is due to dehydration, heart failure, heart attack, or renal artery/vein obstruction.
Are you going to the bathroom more frequently or less frequently than normal??? Tell your PCP to hurry up with that referral.

OK. The creatinine is normal. I am willing to bet the BUN is high because of the high protein diet. BUN (blood urea nitrogen) is a metabolic product of protein metabolism. It is elevated because you are consuming a high protein diet.
But, let your doctor tell you that, LOL. I'm just a nursing student.
