If not able to swallow pills early out, what stool softener do you use?

It's my understanding that it will be chewables for a while, but with all the talk about needing a stool softener, what do you do? Is there a chewable? Liquid?

Thanks!

Denise

You can get colace in liquid form but it's really nasty.  I didn't need a stool softener until about 4 wks out so by then I was able to swallow colace softgels.  The thing with stool softeners is that it's not immediate...it took 4 to 5 days of 2 a day for it to finally work.  So, having said that you could use benefiber by mixing it into food and liquid and you can't taste it...a couple of servings of that a day couldn't really hurt all that much.  Miralax is potent stuff but will work and you can't taste it as well. (they are both powder).  And of course there is always Milk of Magnesia, which if you can stand the taste is a good option.

Denise, when I left the hospital, the criteria I was given as to whether to crush a pill or not was if the pill (or portion of a pill) was the size of the nail bed of my pinkie finger, or smaller, I was permitted to swallow it.

I seem to remember that colace tabs are quite small. As the previous poster said Miralax is pretty potent, but very effective.

The laxative I use, Dulcolax, is so so tiny that you would have no trouble swallowing it.  I promise.  Most of them are like this.

I keep Milk of Magnesia on hand for "emergency" use.  Same with stool softeners.  I have taken to using a minimum of 3 servings of Benefiber a day (usually just mixed into my water) and that keeps things manageable now that I've started taking the calcium and iron supplements.  It probably doesn't help that i eat so much cheese.

I have used Miralax a few times... but it can take a few days to work.  Miralax is a taste-less powder that I mix with water.

I haven't used stool softeners, but if I wanted something, I would use Konsyl mixed with something like a smoothie or protein drink.

I've been eating small amounts of pureed chili with beans, so I am not having problems.

Another Miralax user here.......doesn't have any tastes or odors.  It's a very fine powder you mix in any liquid.
