This may be true, but I still believe the preface of having a blurb about when in doubt call the surgeon or something to that effect. Again, a generic set of rules does not address the unique situation that we are all in. This is the problem with "rules". I work in the psychological field and I KNOW that I tend to treat to the norm of a diagnosis, BUT since every client is DIFFERENT, what works for the majority may not work for ALL.

It is important that since everyone is different that they differ to their surgeon just for the fact that a book does not have the medical history or knowledge of the patient.

I happen to be in an excellent program where we have mandatory 6 months of meetings for education, books and guidelines out the wazoo, meetings with NUTs, medical researcher fellows, hotlines to medical professionals who work for the program, and top-ranked surgeons in the field. They also have support groups for post-ops and closely follow the patients for up to 5 years following surgery.

Maybe I am just lucky to have such an extensive program at a world-class, research hospital, but it is STILL a good idea to at least MENTION that everyone is different and that they should at least CHECK with their surgeon before doing anything with these "rules".  My surgeon went to medical school. I did not. My surgeon has been in practice for a very long time and though I am exceedingly knowledgable (I am a researcher myself...different field, but same concept) I will trust her with my medical care. She has answered all of my questions about every little piece of research I have brought her, so I have complete faith in her as my medical expert.

Life is what you make it and I am making mine a SUCCESS!

I'm sensitive to Whey...so I can't stand the protein bullets or anything with whey...
GNC makes soy protein...it's hard to mix up but i COULD tolerate it better...they also have rice protein at the Vitamin Shoppe and it mixes well with milk/soy products and in water.  Go to either place and tell them you want some samples...they will give you some.

Good luck to ya,

Hi Dawn
When you say you are sensitive to Whey...could I ask how that shows up...what symptoms or problems does it cause?

Kind regards

just like How I bloat and get all gasey...like being lactose intolerant.  I also get nauseas.

So when I start to feel bloated, gasey and nauseas, I check to see if there are any milk products that I have digested and then I look for sugar alcohols and then I check for whey.  So Whey doesn't really knock me over the edge but makes things uncomfortable for me.  I always try to substitute whey products with soy or rice protein.  That has been working for me for about 2 years.

Hi Dawn

I was wondering about the whey protein....because I believe the problem might be lactose, rather than the whey protein itself.

When you read the ingredients list, you often see Whey Protein Isolate, or Whey Protein Concentrate or both.

Whey protein concentrate can be high in lactose...more lactose than protein.

In contrast, Whey Protein ISOLATE has essentially no lactose.  Try a high quality product that has ONLY Whey Protein ISOLATE  (no concentrate) and mix it in water or Lactaid (lactose free milk) and see how that goes down.  My guess is that you won't have the problem.

Does that help?

There is a product called Beneprotein, by the same company that makes Benefiber.  I got it on Walgreens.com since I could never find it in stores.

I could never tolerate the whey proteins, any of them.  One day I tried the natrual (aka "unflavored) soy protein from Genisoy and that did the trick.  It only takes on the taste of whatever else you mix in the shake (I make a vanilla chai latte every morning for myself.)  It's been a lifesaver.

Thanks for all the suggestions!  Hopefully I should be able to find something I can keep down.
