BLECH!  I went through this three times when my daughter was in first grade.  She had the longest, thickest, cleanest hair in class.  Funny thing is, lice prefer CLEAN hair.

Check the other kids too.  And good luck!

Yes...the coconut oil works!!!  I know it sounds crazy that something so simple could work, but it does.  My daughter had it a few years ago & we tried everything.  Her hair is very thick and it was a nightmare trying to get rid of the buggers.  Have your child sleep w/ it in their hair and put a towel on her pillow.  Then use some dish soap to wash her hair in the morning.  It's good to follow up w/ it every so often.
I bought the coconut oil in the hair care aisle.  Good luck.

I remember my aunt shaved all her kids heads, 4 blonde little girls.  They looked bald for a long time.  Not a suggestion, it just made me think of that.

Hi Lexi... I SOOOOOO feel for you!   I've been through it twice with my daughter. If I were close..i would come and help you pick the nits.
Here is my salvation....I went to AC Moore and bought a craft light ..Magnifier.  It clamps onto the table and people use it to needlepoint.   Kind of looks like a magnifing glass the doctor office uses.   It cost maybee $110 less the 40 percent coupon you get off their website.  It was SO worth the $.  The first time we didn't have it, but the 2nd time I ran to the store. Then we loaned it a friend, and then to a relative...and so on , and so on.

The school my kids attends has a NIT free policy and the nurse checks the kid on the way back to school.  We used the Nit stuff from CVS, then picked and picked.  About once a week I use this TeaTree Shampoo (fancy brand) I got also at CVS.  Smells like mint and supposidly the bugs don't like it either.

My daughter's hair was down to her waist. It hadn't been cut since 2 years old til 7 when she got them. The 2nd time..one year to the date later I took her pony and cut it off. That did make the picking so much easier.

I so , so feel for you. Lice in our house is a FOUR letter word!!

We are now always on lice patrol.  We go to dance with a tote bag to put her jacket in the bag. she goes to choir and the jackets goes into a tote bag.  Girlscouts..same thing..jacket goes into the backpack.   We are cautious.

Huggs to you....Joan

responding to what someone said about the aunt that shaved her 4 little girls heads. that is such a sad and pathetic lazy persons way out of the situation. i feel so bad for those little girls when they get sent to school looking like a little boy and getting picked on because their parents were to lazy to take the time to do it right. my husbands cousins wife has done this to their little girls and so has a friend of ours. it makes me so angry to see that done. so sad.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We're going to kick these little buggers asses lol

Luckily Linsey has short hair (like mine) but its very thick, so the combing took FOREVER. If her big sister has them, I am going to have to take a week's vacation to get through her hair...argh!

Brook - I totally agree, I'd never do that to a kid, even my son! But damn if it wasn't tempting after a few hours of picking at her head.

When we lived in Beale, CA...my neighbor left me her second grade daughter so she and hubby could go to Lake Tahoe for the weekend.  Their daughter had lice and slept in my daughter's bed....I called them home after the first day.  Their daughter had hair down to her ass ~ I wasn't gonna go treat their daughter's lice on top of treating my daughter and all our stuff too.

They were a little huffy cause I called them home from their romantic weekend ~ something tells me they knew but just didn't want to deal with it until they got home.  He was military just like us.  I actually threated to call his first sergent if they didn't come home and take care of this...LICE IS A ***** and so am I...LOL

My daughter never got lice but I treated her and everything in the house like it did!!  I'm so sorry you have to go through this!!!

Damn lice!!

I feel bad because she'd told me her head itched for 2 days and I thought it was the dry air from heaters/winter/etc so I just got her some better conditioner...

Guess I learned THAT lesson.

My youngest daughter got lice from a condo we stayed in over the summer. I used vinegar and water and sprayed on her hair to loosen the nits. I like the other suggestions about the coconut conditioner. Pray we never get them in the house again, but will remember all of the suggestions.

UGH I remember when I was little I got lice from a fellow classmate of mine  It was horrible! Because at the time I had the LONGEST hair ever! and boy was it thick! I remember my mom used RID as well and also EVERY lice product she could find at CARRS. Because my little sisters have CURLY THICK and long hair that would break and strangle a lice comb  and well they worked. Lice was gone pretty fast, my mom also washed ALL bed sheets and basically everything I came in contact with. Wish you the best. Get those little succkers!
