RNY on 4/16 and losing slowly. Never hungry, no cravings, no complications, taking my vitamins and labs are good, no food issue or intorances, havent vomited once, and don't want to know if  I dump. Sooo scared to vomit, get stuck, or dump!  I HAVE been taking sips with food because I am scared of food getting stuck.  Others with my BMI and same surgery dates are down 50+ pounds compared to my 32 since surgery (I dont count the  19 lbs lost preop).  I KNOW its because I am not getting enough protein or food. I am lucky if I get 30 grams of protein a day and surgeon wants 60 grams. I am not cheating!!!!  I have been swimming and exercising in the pool everyday. I need to try something different. Vowed yesterday not to drink  or sip with meals. So far so good. I recently read in several blogs that those who lose slowly should try to up protein to 90-100 grams because your body thinks its in shock and thinks its starving and holds on to everything. Makes since to me.  But if I can barely get 30-40 grams its going to be tough to get more. Yesterday I vowed to drink 4  protein drinks @ 23 grams each. Did it but had the bloated feeling all day due to so much fluid intake.   I just finished my 3rd one about 5 minutes ago and will force myself to do another before bed. Can increasing my protein to 90-100 grams help? What are you thoughts?

From what I have read in my health magazines your suppose to taken in 1 gram of protein for  every two pounds of body weight. Below is a link that talks about protein. http://health.discovery.com/centers/nutritionfitness/fitness qa/proteinreq.html

I don't like using hard and fast rules when it comes to things like this.  Besides, 1 gram to 2 pounds is just insane.  I don't care how much anecdotal evidence there is to support it.

Nascar, I would suggest that you modify your diet to be more protein specific.  If you're getting your meals in every day and are still 'lucky' to get 30 grams, then you're not doing something correctly.  You should be concentrating on fish and chicken and then if you have extra calories you can round out your meals.  Currently, I'm coming in at or below 500 cals per day while getting anywhere between 60-100 grams of protein.  Even on weeks when I'm not as dilligent as I should be with walking and going to the gym, I still lose steadily.  My main diet is made up of fish.  Tilapia, Whiting, Salmon, Pollock.  They are all more than reasonably priced and can be prepared to my liking without much fuss

I know I'm a man and it's different, but the same general principle applies.  Your body needs protein.  It doesn't matter HOW many calories you cut, if you're not getting the protein (A) your body will hold onto EVERY calorie (B) Your body will get the protein from the only place it knows . . . your existing muscles.  And yes, your heart is a muscle. Anyway, good luck to you.  Maybe you should consult your Nut to find out ways to improve your protein uptake?

I noticed when I increase my protein, my body really responds! Also, don't freak, but if you don't increase your protein, you are most likely subject to some hair thinning!  It is very important to keep up with the protein! are you using any supplements to compensate for that?  when i first started, it was extremely difficult to get my protein from just food, so i had to begin supplements, through shakes. hope that helps!

I had surgery 2 days before you and am now at 46lbs down (lost 6 in the last 5 days).  I was having the same problem so the last week I started adding extra protein powder to my drinks to bring them up to 30 gms per protein drink.   I don't tolerate millk or soy and found an alternative to dairy but the calories and protein are very low so adding the extra powder increased protein and calories.  i was barely getting 600-650 calories per day.  I am now at about 800 and my weight has started to drop again.  Am I past my stall or did the increased protein help?  Don't know but I am going to continue with what I am doing for now.  The last week I am at about 80 gms per day.  Much better.

30 g protein a day is not enough!  Take it from someone who knows.  I ended up in the hospital with a stricture at 2 1/2 mos, but they said my protein level was "in the basement" at 11 !  Yes, eleven.   I had severe malnutrition of course from the stricture, but the protein levels were horrid.  After I left the hospital, I worked very hard to get in my 60 MINIMUM, and ate and ate all this chicken and protein filled food.  At the end of the day, I was so full .  Surely I had 60!  NO, I had 37! What?! I could not get protein in without protein supplements, more particularly, shakes.  I still drink shakes (I have two a day at least) in order to supplement and make sure I have plenty of protein.  I now get anywhere from 80 on a bad day to 120 on a GREAT day. You surely need your protein, even if you have to resort to drinking shakes.
