Craving Tomatoes???
Ok, before surgery, you could not have PAID me to eat a tomato. Now, I want them chilled, sliced, with salt or balsamic vinegar, basil, crushed tomatoes, tomatoes in sauce, tomatoes in salads, even in drinks! See my picture...a bloody mary! What gives? Someone said it could be a sign of Vitamin C deficiency, but I take my 2 flinstones everyday. Any ideas on what this could be?
Id rather be craving a tomato than a french fry, thank goodness, but just curious if anyone else has had unique cravings after surgery or this one?
tks!
Nicole
Disclaimer: I've had a different surgery.
I also now like tomatoes after surgery, and wouldn't eat anything that was more tomato-based than spaghetti or ketchup pre-op. Now I really like big chunks of tomato in my soups and chili, and on my sandwiches. Mmm, there's just something so darn tasty about well-seasoned tomato chunks. I have not reached the point where I like just biting into a plain old tomato or anything, but I do like tomatoes a lot more than I used to. I feel that this is mostly just a change of tastes since surgery.
I haven't heard of tomato cravings being related to low vitamin C, but I've read a couple things indicating that it could be an indication of iron deficiency.
I know you didn't ask for this kind of advice, but do you plan on adding more vitamins to your regimen? I believe a study was done that basically indicated that after weight loss surgery, most people will end up with a deficiency if all they are taking is a multivitamin. I wish I had a copy of the article or study about it, but I don't. Hopefully someone will come along who has access to it so they can give you the right info. I'm just saying...a multivitamin is almost never enough to keep you from getting deficiencies after RNY. So, on that note, just because you take all your vites, doesn't mean you won't get deficient in something.
Wow you are having bloody mary's that soon? Is it a virgin?
I love tomatoes before surgery. I would eat them with salt. I use to live near a roma tomatoe field when I was little, LOL. I haven't really craved them since surgery. I have ate a few cherry tomatoes bbq'd on a shishkabob, yum.
Now I don't know if this is true, but someone told me to beware of the skins. Skins on corn, grapes, tomatoes, peas, apples, etc. that they can be rough on a newbie and cause a blockage? I dunno if it is true, but I try to peel a grape or tomato if I really want it.

Some people do on the fruits that are really high like bananas, watermelons, pineapple, etc. Once you are allowed to have fruits you will just have to try and see if you dum*****t. I can ea****ermelon like there's no tomorrow but only 1/2 of a banana
. It also helps if I eat something with protein in it at the same time.

Cynthia:
I am almost 3 months post op and I started eating fruits at 7 weeks out. Grapes, strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, apples. I also put fruits in my protein shakes. Quaker oak rice cakes with p&J and a couple of bananas on top. I have not dumped on any of them. Start out slow, take a small bite of a piece of fruit, and see what happens. The OH family says everybody reacts differently. I always tested everything before diving in!
I had my 3 month check up today and I have lost a total of 47 lbs.

There is an article on Yahoo right now linking tomatoes to a salmonella outbreak in quite a few states. I like tomatoes on a few things, but until this blows over, & more facts are known, I'm going to avoid them. It's scary stuff.
ETA: There was just a new report on TV about the salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes in about 9 different states to date. It's simply not worth the risk.
