Has Anyone Had Something Like This Happen????

I am 6-months post-op and have done very well with my weight loss.  I have been very open and honest with the people I work with (or anyone that asks me how I have lost so much weight).  Well, the other night I went to work and seen a posting from some of my co-workers regarding "The Biggest Loser" Contest, which I thought was cool for them.  As I read on (Never once considering joining this group, but intersted in their flyer) I read how they were going to weigh in, etc. and then I seen in big bold capital letters NO SURGICAL INTERVENTIONS. I felt like someone had stabbed me in the heart with a knife...why would any of these 3 people who posted this item think I would join them...I will support them but..why????   By the way I am the only person on my unit that has had the gastric bypass (their are others in the hospital that have either had or are in the process of having gastric bypass).  I was so angry and hurt that I could not even think rationally. My boss was up at the desk and she wanted to do an educational update with me before my shift started. I told her today might not be a good day for that and she asked why and I told her...She was dumbfounded and apologized for the insensitivity of the persons that wrote this. (she had not seen it yet). She went and got one of the individuals that wrote it and made her take these posters down and explained that this was inappropriate and she should re-word her poster. My boss then came to me and said this person did not mean to hurt me   my head answer was BULL****but my answer to her was "then what did they think it would do"  I thought this group of people knew me well enough to know that I did what I did for my health and that I would never take advantage and join their group. P.S.  None of the three of the individuals that made up this poster has said anything to me.  One of the individuals had said to me, about 1 month after I was back to work, "I am so jelous of you, I HATE YOU!!" and then laughed.  I told her then that was a really mean thing to say and she said "I am only kidding"  I guess not. I am just so hurt and angry...Do I have a right to be????   Thanks for any comments.  Karen Schworm

You have every right to be angry, but don't let it control you.  That's what they want.  They're jealous of your obvious success and they want to bring you down to their level.  Rise above it.

I gotta ask... didya kick them?  :) I am so sorry your co-workers are so insensitive.  I agree with Daniel, you have every right to be angry, but that is what they want.  Then you aren't as awesomely happy.  But don't let em get you down.  You are doing so well! (((((Hugs))))) P.S. if you kick 'em, I wouldn't blame you.  I would even help.

I don't know the specifics of the situation but is it possible they weren't thinking of you when they posted it? I think it's probably a disqualifier to have had surgery for the show so I'm wondering if they pulled their rules directly from there and didn't even have you in mind. I mean, in a sense it's NOT fair for you to compete with people who can diet and exercise and lose without surgical intervention. I just can't imagine anyone being intentionally that cruel. I hope I'm right....

They did this at my work too but thankfully it was started while I was out on vacation and didn't see the notices - or they didn't send them to me.

I have my own issues with the people at work. Most rage from jealous to down right antagonistic because I took "the easy way out". I don't even try now to correct their thinking. They aren't worth my time. AND I'm looking for another job right now. They've pushed me right to the edge and I need a fresh start.

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Don't even let them think it affected you at all. They are jealous!  Water off a ducks back.  Dont give them the satisfaction.    Shine in your sucess and watch their envious eyes roll back in their heads.

I think you are taking it personally when its really not meant to be...  I can understand them wanting to exclude people who had surgery - if they are doing a competition you really have an unfair advantage. They could have been a wee more sensitive and said people who had surgery could participate and but not compete against the group - I have seen that done before at other places who were doing group weight loss challenges.

I agree with you 100%. I believe we should all consider one anothers feelings but in this case I don't believe the post was ment to harm anyone. It would be very unfair to include a person with wls. I had to deal with a person at church recently who I felt was being rude to me, once we talked she claims she ment no harm. God Bless

I totally understand why you're upset, and I don't blame you one bit.  It would have hurt my feelings, as well.  And I applaud your supervisor's sensitivity and response to your complaint. HOWEVER, you and I and everyone else has tried diet and exercise as a means of weight loss - with no lasting results.  We KNOW how hard it is to lose weight effectively that way, and that is why we had WLS in the first place. With that in mind, imagine how unfair it may seem to folks trying the old fashioned way to lose weight - for a PRIZE - when they are competing against YOU, who has had MUCH in the way of help in terms of weight loss. While I don't believe that they wanted to slight you at all, I do believe that it is fair that they ask that you - and your tool - not participate in a contest like that - or at LEAST not to accept the prize if you lose the most.   You certainly have more than a leg up on them, wouldn't you say? So try not to take it personally.  This contest is for folks who all have the same size stomach, the same battle to fight.  At six months out, you will lose weight no matter what, and your intake of food is extremely limited by your small pouch.  You are not in the same league as they are in terms of weight loss - you are light years ahead.   Let them have their little contest.  You will win your own weight loss battle in the long run! Keep your chin up! Amy K
