My tongue and ketosis... Is this normal?

I have been in ketosis for about four weeks now due to no carbs in my diet. I was on the liquid preop diet for two weeks and had surgery on Feb. 11. I am still on liquids for a few more days.  The problem is that my tongue has this film on it that won't go away. It is contributing to bad breath I am sure. The top of my tongue is a brownish color and it doesn't go away after brushing. Has anyone experienced this? It is really gross but thought I'd turn to you all before calling the doctor. Thanks :-)

If that happens, it means you are going to grow an arm out of the side of your head and a leg out of your stomach.  Good luck with that.   Sorry, I have no clue.

It is icky!!! My tongue feels like it is growing fur on it ;-) But being in ketosis means I am losing weight so I guess I'll have to deal with it for a lil while.

You could also try brushing your tongue when you brush your teeth...Either that or a tongue scraper can help with that excess bacteria in there...

Ketosis gives you a dry mouth that has a metal taste to it.  Like you have been chewing on a tin can or foil.. Now if your tongue is whitish in appearance and u cannot get it off it could be an oral yeast infection secondary to the antibiotics they had you on in the hospital.. I had it and to go on nystatin for a while.. its a swish stuff and u swallow it.  Icky tasting but did the trick.. just make sure u don't have thrush.  good luck

That happened to me too  no matter how much I drank my tongue felt dry and fury and had this wierd growth on it - I kept showing my sister who was completely grossed out.  I also had this wierd feeling to it, like dry mouth on adderall or something... anyway if I remember correctly it ended after 2 weeks... it almost felt like a hair ball or something gross!

I had thrush, which is usually white but mine ended up being a brownish black color because the vitamins and iron that I chewed the first month after surgery turned it that color. I would ask your Dr. and they can let you know right away and give you a prescription. I really didn't think it was thrush becuse of the color...but I was wrong!  Liz

they also sell tongue scrapers that might help its sorta a loop of plastic you rake over the tongue to help cleanse it...
