Im about to freak my freak! i smell!!!!
Hi Robin,
I notice that you are less than one month out, so congrats on your wls!. One thing that you might be experiencing is a very heightened sense of smell. I know I had it and have read from many other posters who had similar experiences. I don't know if it got better or I just don't notice it as much anymore, but it did pass after a few months. But during that time nearly every smell made me sick. I could smell other people's BO from 20 paces and everyone's breath stunk to me. I didn't even enjoy kissing my wife! All this being said, other people may not even notice this oder. If you have a close friend who you know will be honest with you, ask them if you stink. If they say no, then I'll bet nobody (other than another recent post-op) can even smell it.
I hope this helps...

OH my gosh, I haven't had surgery, but I totally relate to what you are saying, since I've been losing weight like I had "RNY Lite".... some times I have this super-smeller and it drives me crazy! I've had to change shampoo four times in the last two months because every shampoo I use is RANK with a chemical smell... I swear I thought we had a spilled bottle of chemicals in the house and me and hubby kept looking everywhere but finally he confessed that he smelled nothing and I realized that the smell was specifically ON ME.... my hair.... it was nauseating!
I think you might have nailed this one... there is increased smells, but also a heightened SNIFFER and the combination is deadly... you're convinced you're walking around like a toxic cloud, and others might never notice, or get a whiff of a mild but not intolerable odor.
You gave good advice. I'll have to keep it in mind. I know that with my dieting I always know when I'm "doing good"... I get super sensitive to smells and my breath could whither a field of dandelions

Hi Lady Lithia,
First off, congrats on your upcoming wls! You are the first non-op I have ever heard of experiencing this. I had no idea it was linked to weight loss. I thought it was linked somehow to the surgery as I don't hear lap banders complain about it like RnY folks. I sure hope I didn't frighten you. What if it gets even more intense after your surgery? You'll need nose plugs!
But seriously, it was a force to be contended with for a few months. My wife tried to slow-cook a pot roast overnight once when I was about six weeks out. I woke up in the middle of the night and it smelled like someone had stuffed a whole can of corned beef hash up my nose! It was so bad I got up, unplugged the crockpot and put it outside! Needless to say my wife was none too pleased but I just couldn't stand it.

Bob, in my efforts to "practice" the RNY lifestyle to prove to myself that I COULD do it, I have experienced a lot of the "side effects" of the surgery.... for example, my nose gets runny when I have had enough food. I think that this is due to my altering my own food intake to the point where I can now recognize what "full" feels like. In addition, I've found that drinking while eating is a true clue to eating too much. I don't drink with my meals... and I get full a lot faster. Once I was out with hubby at a restaurant and I was thirsty (had been bad about liquid that day) and I guzzled with my food, and I ate something like three times what I normally would in my new post-op state. Heck, if I eat too fast now, now that I've been practicing eating small amounts of food.... I get foamies and feel "stuck" .... I've got everything like I've had surgery, without having surgery! (and without the stoppage that some complain of)
I'm not too worried about the smells. I don't mind "natural" smells, it's just the chemicals that drive me batty!

Wow... I have never met a pre-op who has taken the bull by the horns in the manner in which you have. You are going to totally rock the house after surgery.
But... Please be informed that things change post-op. The mere sight of some foods you used to enjoy pre-op are going to turn your pouch. If you watch TV during your healing process, you are going to be amazed at how many food commercials there are and some are going to make you want to puke. For me the Sprite commercials were the worst. To this day anything "limon" flavored makes me want to hurl.
May you be spared...

Thanks for the compliments. I realize that there might be some changes pre- to post-op.... and I have a plan for post-op.... I have like eight seasons of one particular show all on DVD.... NO commercials!
I've "blanded" my diet down completely.... It can hardly be any more bland than it is now. I hope!
But whatever/wherever the ride takes me, that's where I will go.

Hehe I remember the heightened sense of smell from when I was pregnant. I thought everything was exceptionally smelly. Ever since I had surgery it's been the same way. I can't kiss my husband because his breath reeks to me. The bathroom has this horrid bleach smell every time I go in there. And our son's diapers nearly knock me out. Meanwhile, I can smell a steak cooking a mile away.
I know the ketosis for me is coming. I bought some s/f mints and will simply apologize to my friends in advance lol
I hear you. It reminds me of being pregnant. I didn't need no test when I knew I was pregnant.
I have the same problem right now. It's so bad that I have gotten sick over the last couple of weeks. For example, my little boy is so sick and I cannot stand cleaning the messes from both ends. He's only two and thankfully my husband, Lord bless him, has taken over because I dry heave every time I get near a diaper. I've never had that problem before.
Cigarette smoke is another. I can smell it a mile away. It's nasty. Here I'm a reformed smoker and it didn't bother me as much after I quit, but after surgery I want to DIE.
I hope this passes because I now have a weak stomach and I am taking my EMT classes again.
