Stupid law in Mississippi-----targets the obese!

what a load of crap. There are some people that don't want to be thin. I guess they figured that it worked so well for smokers.. NOT! California even wants a law stating that you can't smoke in your own home. I just can't believe some of the crap they come up with. Are they going to have BMI calculators or something at the counter?

Personally, I dont think anyone wants to be fat, consciously anyway. I see many fat people in my job. Old and young alike, they all want to be thin!!! They just dont know how to do it.

I couldn't believe this when I heard it. Just another discrimination against big people. Wouldnt there time be better spent in awarness programs or somthing that will actually help!!! I cant even believe somone would try to pass a bill like this.

This will never go anywhere;  there are too many fat folks in the South for the businesses to risk losing their customer base. I'd say it was almost tongue-in-cheek satire except I don't think  they understand satire in MS. (Heading for my flame-proof shelter!!)

I live in LA.  We call it a banana republic. I know Miss, Ala well.  Lots of obese people. There needs to be a national push or campaign if you will for obesity. Step up the rhetoric.  Penalize the heaviest people that have  health insurance, have a company weight loss program, etc. It certainly sounds like discriminaiton!!  But, the pressure it puts on all of us including Medicare, Medicaid, insurance companies.  Obesity is becoming pandemic.  Who would ever think that China has an obese society.  Why??  Fast food

Having just spent three weeks in China I can tell you that I only saw 2 fat Chinese people. Yes, there is fast food in China, but the thing that is going to contribute to their expanding waistline (if it happens) is not going to be fast food, it is because more and more people own automobiles because the government is allowing people to take out loans to buy them when before (and I can't remember how long ago, but within the last 10 years I think) they had to pay all money up front to get a car.  Fast food is definitely a contributing factor to so many Americans being obease, but I don' t think our government has any right to say who can eat there and who can't. This is ridiculous.

jon always by you.

I saw that on TV and couldn't believe it. What's next? Overweight or non-attractive women can't shop at Victoria's Secret? People that smoke can't buy cigarettes? People that drink too much can't go to bars? WTH?

This is certainly interesting.  As American society moves more and more toward government provided medicine, we give that same government a good rationale for controlling our behavior.  After all, they are paying the health care bill AND having to deal with the aftermath of bad choices so it only makes sense they would like to reduce health care costs by eliminating bad choices. The problem is, if you can cook you can make yourself obese even without a restaurant and the addict will not be stopped by having to make their own destruction. Interestingly, as more and more of the American population becomes obese lawmakers will be forced to listen to their contituents (or be voted out).  Smokers are in the minority, the same is not true of the obese.

You're right!!  This goes for anything.  I dont like government health care.  My husband's aunt in Ireland waited 22 months for a hip replacement.  By definition:  National Health Service means.....................RATIONING. When we have products that were defective and the company doesnt react.  Then we have the government stepping in.  If people did the right thing we probably wouldnt have all the government interference.  People wont like what the governemnt will offer them.  You'll still have the people like us with what the government will allow and the Washington bureaucrats and  government employees with what I call the golden policy. How do you effect bad behavior??  Taxes,...rising the prices so high that you stop the behavior in question, therapy?  Dont know. My husband will sees patients in his office month after month.  He tells them to lose weight or you're gonna die.  They never seem to follow his advice. He just throws his hands up.  He'll keep taking their money (the pittance that medicare pays and decreased insurance reimbursements). Of course, I'm guilty myself.  RYN Feb 19.

I don't think this is the answer.  Just like a lot of others posted, if you want it bad enough you will find a way to get it, even if they turn you away at the register.  I just hope it doesn't come down to people getting a McDealer. (Pssst. Could you score me a McValue Fry?)  I think making changes to menu items is a great start.  I offer my children better choices, because I don't want to repeat my struggles with weight for them.  I'm not saying we don't get a burger sometimes, but ultimately it is our responsibility to monitor ourselves and our children.  Portion control is a main factor here in the .  We want a lot for the buck, no matter how much it "cost" us in the long run.  Personally, much of my weight problem has been due to bad habits (and yes there is a genetic aspect to it as well)!  I have relied on food for everything.  I am using my unhealthy relationship with food to modify my actions as a parent so the cycle hopefully doesn't continue.
