Topic: RE: New to group. Upcoming surgery!

Wow!! That is amazing and just what I needed to hear! My revision was Wednesday April 26 and it went well. Dr said a little trouble removing the port but after that it was textbook. I get out of the hospital tomorrow April 29 and we have to fly to our daughter's university graduation on Tuesday May 1!! Not at all how this was originally planned but thanks to the insurance company, it is what it is. My hubby is concerned about the flights but my dr said I will be fine. Take my meds and walk, walk, walk!!!

Topic: RE: Revision from RNY to sleeve and eventually DS

Here's the link to the revision surgeons:

http://bariatricfacts.org/threads/current-list-of-known-rny- or-lapband-to-ds-surgeons.1403/

Do you understand and feel comfortable with the loop-DS? There's 20+ years of great research into the full DS and long term results.

There's less than 5 years of research on the loop DS and it doesn't go much beyond results for the first 18 months.

i did really well for the first 5-6 years with my rny so I want to make sure any surgery I have will give me the long term results I need.

The best advice I can give is to research the difference and talk to a surgeon who does the full DS so you get a fuller picture.

good luck!

Hey, thanks for your reply!

My surgeon is Dr Sheila Partridge at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in MA. I looked at the bariatric facts page but haven't found the list of doctors yet. I have absolute trust in her, and her practice is a Center for Excellence.

She only does the DS SIPS. Like I said, I'm hoping the revision to sleeve will do the trick, but I like the idea of having another option somewhere down the road. She only does DS in 2 separate surgeries, sleeve, then DS. Since my sleeve is a revision it will be more involved and a longer surgery.

insurance covers on a case by case basis, so I am concerned that if I want the DS my BMI might be too low for them to approve but it's a chance I'm willing to take.

Thanks for telling me about the other site. Knowledge is power!

Topic: Band removed 2015, considering RNY

Hi, I'm new here. I'm just starting this process and looking for info. I was banded in 2013 and my band worked well. I lost about 80 pounds. In 2015 I ended up with a stomach bug with uncontrollable vomiting and managed to jack up my band. I had to have it removed. The surgeon said he had to chizzle his way through a bunch of scar tissue and ended up knocking my stomach. He closed me up and the band was not replaced. I was really disappointed in the surgeon and how he handled some things with the removal and Him basically telling me he wouldn't operate on me again. So now here it is 2018 and I've gained all the weight back and then some. I'm miserable. I'm angry with myself. I decided to make an appt with a highly recommended surgeon that I've done a lot of research on. I want to ask about RNY. Since the band is already gone, would this even be considered revision? Has anyone had a similar situation?

Topic: Revision from RNY to sleeve and eventually DS

I had my gastric bypass surgery March 2007. Stopped losing after 6 months and never got anywhere near my goal weight SW 271. Lowest weight 202. Fast forward 11 years and I've gained ALL of the weight back, and more. Current weight is 282.

I went to my original surgeon in January to have my gallbladder removed and she suggested a revision. I was surprised because I didn't think it was even a possibility. I am now looking at a revision from RNY to gastric sleeve. Surgeon was not sure how much weight I can lose this way. The ultimate goal is to get a DS, although I am hoping the sleeve results will be good enough and I won't need a 2nd surgery. I'm having a tough time finding info on this as my case seems to be unique. Surgeon does DS in 2 separate surgeries. First sleeve, then a few months later the DS. My sleeve is a revision, though. My surgeon says she's the only surgeon in the New England region that does this.

I'm wondering if there is anyone out there in my situation. Or, ones who have the sleeve and then gone to DS in a 2nd surgery.

Any advice?

Topic: Had A ERNY in 2009 looking for some answers

I wanted to post for all of you who have been toying with the idea of having an ERNY or also known as Distal Gastric Bypass.

I had mine in 2009. The weight loss was slow but steady for the first 2 years. I ate and ate and ate and the weight dropped off. I experienced most of the nasty side affects from ERNY...Potty issues, Vitamin Loss, etc., sluggish, leg aches. However, I've notice this past year the potty issues are less and less almost normal unfortunately and pretty sure my vitamin levels are better as my hair is thicker, nails are more healthy and I'm starting to show some weight gain but remember this is after 11 years of post surgery. I started my ERNY at 220 lbs and had maintained 136 for the past 4-5 years. I actually went as low as 125 lbs. But for me that is too thin. My comfort zone is 136 lbs. I'm now up to 144 and Im starting to panic as I don't ever want to get above 145 again in my life. I'm not sure though that I have that control as the past 11 years I could just eat anything I wanted and the weight just dropped off, especially if I ate fat laden meals as with this surgery you do not absorb but about 20% of the fat you eat. Sadly not the case anymore. I believe I have been one of the lucky ones when it comes to this procedure. As many of the people I knew here on OH had the surgery done and had to have it revised due to extreme vitamin loss and extreme potty issues. Much of it had to do with how short or long the surgeon left their common channel. My was set at 75 cm I believe. But I never knew for sure. But as in most WLS the honeymoon season does come to an end at some point and you have to be responsible for your diet and exercise. I believe I have hit my point now.

I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there that had the ERNY and if they are as far as 11 years past surgery date. I would like to know their experiences with the procedure.

Thank you.

Janie

Thank you.

Thank you so much for your input. I know the potty issue may be problematic for me, as far as work accessibility. Ill keep plugging away at options.

Topic: RE: Revision - shortening common channel

I've had an ERNY which left me with a 75 Common Channel and I had some major issues for several years from it. I seem to have come through it and I now am scared that I'm no longer malabsorbing like I was and that I am going to gain weight. I've maintained 136 for about the past 4-5 years and it's been 9 years since I had the ERNY procedure done. A DS I thought was more like 100 cm of Common Channel.

Hi Karen...

I can give you my experience. I had Gastric Stapling in 1977, revised to GB in 1991 due to the Gastric Stapling came apart. After 20 years, year 2009 I had a ERNY. At the time I was back up to 220 lbs. After ERNY I Lost as far down as 125 and I am just now starting to experience some weight gain, I have maintained a weight of about 136 for the past 4 years. I'm now at 144. I have had issues with the ERNY such as potty issues, vitamin issues, however, my body seems to have gotten used to the shortened intestines and I seem okay. Just hate that the malapsorbtion has pretty much come to a halt. If you can get the DS I understand it is much better for you. Dr. Ara Keshishian is the best at this and is in California. Good Luck to you.
