LAPBAND REVISION?
Hi,
I haven't been here in a while. I just wanted to ask a question? Has anyone here ever heard of someone getting a gastric bypass after the lapband.
I have had the band for 2 1/2 years I have lost about 60lbs but still need to lose about 85-100 more. I am having problems with my esophagus, due to the band and my doctor suggested a revision. I am in alot of pain with the band and I am going in for an unfill and to dicuss options. What do you think?
I would appreciate any opinions.
Thanx so much
Starr, I do not think this is uncommon. Please continue to find other people (many on OH and I am sure elsewhere) who've experienced this and continue to research.
Sorry that you've had to go through all that you've been through. And if you are indeed set on a revision, research and chat with DSers (Duodenal Switch). Find the best doctors and follow-up care no matter what you decide to do.
All the very best to you,
Leila AKA Starr (too)
Taking the band out is easy. After its gone your body is like it never had it. Having a RNY would be like anyone else having it - phsyically that is. I don't know how much you weight most most people who are 100 pounds met the NIH for wls. if your closer to 85 - or your bmi is less than 40 but not under 35; I wouldnt think you would have too much trouble getting it thru insurance due to your troubles with the lapband.
Hey there! I had the lap band in 2003, had a slippaged in 2004, and I have constant problems with reflux. I'm currently in the process of getting approved for the Gastric bypass. I went to the bypass surgeon last week. He said that the surgery might take longer because of scarring from the lap band and said I won't have reflux after the surgery. I would also like to know if there are any other lap band patients that are going through the same thing or have had this done.

Hey I am dealing with my band now and am tied on what to do. I also deal with reflux much worse than before banding. Mine is slipped and I am removing mine but very confused on what I am doing after that if I am going to remove it and do nothing or do rny or another band but I dunno the band is iffy to me.
I had lapband in 2001, lost 160 pounds...then due to pregnancy had complications in which it had to be removed. Initially I found no local surgeon who would re-do my WLS.
5 years later I'm scheduling to have the RNY...long story short, surgeon indicated that there is alot of scarring from the initial banding, and then having the band removed...he was against doing any other upper-abdmominal procedure due to that.
I recommend that if you have the band removed, that you have another form of WLS in the same sitting. In the 3 years after having the band removed, I gained every bit of the 160 pounds that I'd lost. it's harder to deal with the 2nd time around!

Starr,
I live in the Los Angeles area, but I had my band removed--three months ago--by Dr. Ara Keshishian http://dssurgery.com/ in Delano, just north of Bakersfield. He does band-to-DS revisions. It took about two or two-and-a-half months for my espohagus to start recovering. I had regained all the weight I lost the first year I had the band, but I have lost about 60 pounds now.
Good luck on finding your solution.
Sue
Starr, I have a lapband and my doctor is going to do the RNY over the lapband, not sure if that is how is it said. But he is leaving the band in for possibly future use should I need better restriction.
His name is Daniel Cottam and is with Surgical Weight Loss Center of NV.
I am scheduled for April 18th so can try and let you know after how it went.
