I asked about this on the main board, and everyone said its a bad idea, that it becomes undone. Anyone have any info for me? Can it be done to not come undone? (I have not had any weightloss surgery, but had thought this might be for me) Thanks, Lisa

I had that type of surgery in 1982, that was the standard WLS of its day. 5 -10 years out a very large percentage have regained some of, all of, or MORE than the weight lost. It restricts the stomach and works well the first year to year and a half. I lost from 260 to 165 in 14 months. If this is the type surgery you want, check out the Lap Band WLS. It is a banding of the stomach that is controlable. Your surgeon can make it tighter or looser depending on your needs. and it can easily be reversed. The stomach stapling, as it was called in the early 1980's, compared to todays RNY and DS is like comparing a Commadore64 to a WindowsXP compatible computer!! Why even bother to get the 64???? The stapling had a real tendency to develop leaks at the staple line, and the pocket it causes is larger than the RNY pouch(which is very much smaller that the restriction of the stomach in the DS) and stretches out easier than the pouch. It does leave the pylorus valve intack just as the DS does, but it does NOT have the malobsorbstion of the DS or the RNY(which is much less than the DS) I have also learned(the HARD way) that the earlist form of stapling, a horizontal position, had a problem with damaging an artery that feeds blood to the stomach. The VBG, or Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, had its own problems. The staple line on it ran vertically and a band was placed around the pylorus to slow down the exit of food from the stomach into the intestines. The Banding had the reputation of breaking down and causing friction or rubbing of the surrounding tissues which caused scarr tissue and if the tissue built up inside of the band area it could cause blockage of the stomach exit and back up of food into the esophogus. This too, I learned the HARD way!! I had the stapling in 1982 ans a revision toa VBG in 1989. Both have now failed and I now weigh in at 310 lbs. In our family we have "Davidsons' Law"....Murphy was an optimist!!! In our family, if it can go wrong it does!! I am a layman in this area and I am just reporting on my own experinces with these types of surgery. Patty

I had that surgery about 7 years ago. I lost a lot of weight during the first year to a year and a half but then staples started to let go and i started to gain weight again. I took all the weightloss back and more! Now i recently did RNY, and because of that other surgery i had no other option than RNY. My surgeon says that a lot of the peeps having that type of surgery regained their weight because of the staples coming lose.

Stomach stapling itself has come a long way since the 80's. Look up the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy and read the posts. A good website is: http://lapsf.com/vertical-gastrectomy-weight-loss-surgery.php With the VSG, they take out the Ghrelin part of your stomach...this is the part that produces the hormone that tells you that you're hungry. This is the 1st step procedure to the DS. Goos luck in whatever you choose.

Hi Lisa: I have to agree with another post here. I'd research the lap band. That's my procedure of choice and is completely reverisble for any give reason, no staples, no rerouting. Everybody is different and this is the choice for me. Do your homework and make sure of your choice AND your surgeon before you start down this road. Its a big decision and you want to make sure you have all the facts. Good luck to you. La Wanda

I had that same surgery done 7 years ago and have since regained all of my weight. I found your information because I am looking into having something different done. Blessings and may you make the right decision for you.

I too suggest you consider the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. It CAN'T 'come undone' like the old stomach stapling often did, because the excess part of the stoma*****luding the portion that secretes most of the body's hunger hormone---is completely removed from the body. You're left with a smaller yet fully-functional stomach, and no malabsorption. However, should this restriction-only form fo surgery now do as much for you as you hope, it's relatively easy to go back in and convert to the full DS, THE most successful form of WLS.
