Band revision surgery

I found the recovery to be quite comparable.  The only difference I found was I tired more easily after the gastric bypass.  I had surgery on Monday came home on Wednesday.  I took it easy the rest of the week and was out by the next week.  I didn't drive but I was able to go with my husband doing errands and such.  I would come home and rest in the afternoons but was able to cook dinner etc.  I have never had dumping syndrome.  I loved sweets prior to surgery, but now I can take them or leave them.  If I do have anything, I will just have a bite and that is all I want.  I have no problem with salads.   A salad with grilled chicken is my go to meal. The best part of the surgery is not having food get stuck, no sliming or throwing up.  No reflux.  I am off one BP med.  I still take one, but the dosage is half what I used to take.  I no longer have to take a PPI and have eliminated one cholesterol medication.  Overall, I feel much better than I ever did with the band.  I had trouble with the band from day one and was never happy with the weight loss.  I am glad it is out of my body.  Even though I had my plumbing rerouted, I believe it was the right decision.

That sounds terrific.  I'm so glad it went so well for you.  I really appreciate your experiences.

You have answered so many of my questions.  I had the Band removed and RNY done on the 18th of February. The band had caused much scar tissue and eroded and the tube had caused a hole in my stomach.  Was not an easy surgery but feel that I am on the mend now.

Today I start on soft foods and I must admit that I am a bit nervous.  I am still dealing with some pain and really don't want to cause dumping.  Do you have any advise for me on what I should eat in the beginning?

I do feel like you in that I am so relieved that the band is out. I had problems from the beginning and the surgeon who did the band said that all was normal.

Thank you,

Rise'

I am having revision from band to bypass on Wednesday and my surgeon is concerned about scar tissue or possible erosion ... so of course I am worried that there could be complications. Can i ask how long it took you to get back to work? Also, do you know how long your surgery took?

Thanks

Maggie

Sorry I didn't answer you before your surgery.  Lightning struck the house next door to us on Monday and fried our box outside for the internet.  You will have had your surgery by the time you read this.  I hope things went well for you.  I am retired so I can't tell you how long it would have been before I could go back to work.  I will tell you by the second week I was out running errands and such. I wasn't able to drive, but I was able to be out.  I did tire easily and had to rest everyday.  If I was still working, I don't think I would have been able to work a normal work wee****il at least 4 weeks out.  Depends on what type of job you have.  Please let me know how the surgery went.

Don't go by what the NUT says asked the doctor he knows best. I am going from the band to the sleeve my Dr suggested it over the by pass because is Easyer and safer for me because of medical problems and my age. Sometimes the dr won't make that decision until he does your EGD see what shape your stomach is in.Your doc knows

best

Hi, I got the lap band in March '07. I did very well with the band and lost 90 pounds and gained and lost between 10-20 pounds over time. At the end of 2014 I started to get reflux while I was sleeping - really scary! In Jan '15 I was diagnosed with a slipped band and told I had to have it removed. I was really upset as I knew I couldn't regain all that weight. I was unfilled and scared.

I saw another surgeon who told me with my reflux, the sleeve was not an option. She said the sleeve sits horizontal in the body and commonly causes reflux. She said I would be very happy with the bypass. At the end of Oct '15 I had the lap band removed and revised to the gastric bypass. It went very well - in the hospital one night, up running errands on the third day post op, and returned to work (from home) in one week and back in the office two weeks post op.

i loved the band but I have to admit I feel so much better with the bypass (which, by the way, I was so opposed to). I have not thrown up, "slimed", or "got stuck" since surgery. I'm so much more comfortable eating good healthy food. I'm full fast and the fullness last so long that a lot of time I have to watch the clock to make sure I eat.

i feel like I'm losing slower than a first timer, but I'm down 42 pounds in a little over three months. Wi**** were more, but I've lost a total of 120 pounds since 2007 and that's amazing to me.

Good luck with whatever option you choose, and if you have any other questions I could answer, let me know.

Hi, I had my band removed April of 2015 and had gastric bypass RNY on 1/21/16. I too was going back and forth with the sleeve or RNY. I choose the RNY because I was scared of the possible re-gain with the sleeve 3-4 years. By fact, gastric bypass has more of a successful rate.  I will say recovery was swift with RNY being as though they re-arranged the stomach. Since surgery I am down 38 pounds (8 pounds in pre-op). Super excited! Definitely do your research and good luck on your journey.

My story is exactly the same.  I had to check to see if it was a post of mine !! Had the band out in 2014. Having RNY next month. Can't do the sleeve because my issue was reflux as well. That middle of the night reflux mentioned in one of these posts is scary as heck.  I am peaceful about my decision to do RNY. I lost 70 on the band and gained 90 back. Can't wait til 3.16!! Best of luck to you

My surgeon said he would not revise from the band to the bypass. He said that the band causes a thickening of the tissue where the band is and that is exactly where he would cut to do the bypass. I hope he is right. I also don't want to go through this again. I have a friend who must weig around 500 pounds and they recommended the sleeve for him. The said there isn't much difference between weight loss sleeve vs band.
