Post VSG 6 Months- Worried about heartburn and acid reflux- advice needed!!!

I had VSG over 6 months ago and I'm one of those super lucky people that have HORRIBLE heartburn. Before surgery I had heartburn every once in the blue moon after eating too much crap. Now, it's heartburn on a daily basis from the moment I wake up :/

I've tried Prilosec, Nexium, and a prescription from my doctor. These all work while I'm taking them, but the moment I stop- the heartburn comes right back! I know you're not supposed to take them continuously... and obviously I can't sit around eating TUMS all day! I know the next step is going to a specialist for further evaluation, but I guess what I'm worried about is having to be revised to RNY. I did not plan for this and I love my sleeve- I started out as a "light-weight" and I think RNY would make me super tiny!

Soooo for those of you that needed to get a revision from sleeve to RNY for heartburn/ reflux issues... please share your story!!! What was the timeframe for this decision? What kind of medications did you try? Any advice???

I was on the med and we were told to take them for a whole year twice a day.  With the research posted here a while back I took my self down to one a day and went thru 3/4 weeks of hell and than no heartburn.  At a year I stopped taking the second and went thru the same 3/4 week of hell.  After that all was fine.  I found out my daughter was doing the same as you she was two year farther out and every time she stopped it got so bad she went right back on.  After I talked to her she stopped and after the 3/4 weeks was fine.  The problem is when you stop the PPI's you body goes into overdrive producing acid.  It has to get back to normal first.  The sister also went thru this and she was a year farther out now all three of us just take probiotics.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Thanks for posting this! I guess that's why when I stop taking the pills my heartburn goes crazy. Just need to weather the storm and see what happens. I'll keep monitoring my heartburn and maybe go to a specialist soon.

If your surgeon was aware of your violent heartburn prior to surgery he is irresponsible in advising a VSG.  Going to a bypass will relieve you of that...

Before surgery I rarely ever had heartburn. Maybe a few times a year (around holidays when I overate a TON of crap)... but that's it.... and it wasn't even all that bad. It was definitely not a recurring problem for me.

I am facing that now...I am 3 years out and the heartburn at night and GERD is killing me.  My gums are red and inflamed and I have sore throat all the time.  I have an apt with my surgeon this week and also an upper gi test. I sleep on 4 pillows and I wake up all hours of the night coughing and burning.  I take the acid reducer pills and also liquid Carafate. I haven't noticed much change since being on the meds again.
