Revision Help

Hello,

I recently went to a new hospital to see about a revision done as my original doctor who performed my open RNY gastric bypass in 2009 has had his license suspended. This new place is giving me a bit of a hard time about it.

The psychiatrist there feels I need help with my eating as she says it's behavioral.  This is only one visit I had with her. "I am desperate". What can I say or do to help with having a revision (sleeve) done. I have never lost what I wanted to with my original surgery. I was still  70lbs overweight. Now I'm close to being back up to my original weight. I'm so scared.  Any advice for me?

Thanks!

You may not like what I have to say but I agree with the psychiatrist.  If your obesity is caused by behavior issues then all the revisions in the world won't help you.  WLS doesn't cause you to stop having food issues.  All it does is give you a hand in eating right.  If you choose not to utilize that help then the surgery is useless.

Don't think I am being cold or insensitive.  I know what you are going through.  I managed to outeat my first WLS which was supposed to be the most effective WLS available but I didn't deal with my addiction to refined carbs and there is no WLS in the world that will work if you keep eating the things you ate before WLS.

That isn't to say that you shouldn't get a revision if you think it will help you.  It just means you need to take an honest appraisal of why your first surgery didn't work and find out what you need to do differently this time to make it work for you.  Personally I think more surgeons should require some kind of eating disorder evaluation and treatment before doing WLS.  It's kind of like doing a liver transplant on an alcoholic that continues to drink.

Also, I may be completely out of line here and the reason your surgery didn't work is because it wasn't done right or there was a structural failure.  Since your original surgeon lost his license he may have not done the surgery correctly and that left you without a useful tool.  In that case it still doesn't hurt to address any eating issues you have but also to make sure you are getting the right tool for what you need.

Anyway, instead of getting angry or hurt at the psychiatrist you might ask for her help in dealing with the behaviors that need to be worked on.  Maybe counseling with an eating disorder specialist or attending Overeaters Anonymous meetings.  If your original surgery is still intact and functioning then you may not need a revision but help in using it more effectively to your benefit.

Hi  I had my original RNY  surgery in 2009 and I  have been approved her in Texas by Dr. Alexander for and I think it called ERNY

I'm kinda  wanting  to be revised to the DS but not many doctors here is performed that as a revision surgery .

I believe there is a  Dr who does the DS revision.  I think he took the doctor who passed away practice over since he was studying under him. I believe his name is Aooyla. Ask a veteran DS member they know!

Check into this as the ERNY doesn't seem to have good results.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.
