Undecided & confused

I had lap band 2008 & lost 90 lbs within 1.5 years. Now I'm 30 lbs away from my original weight before the band. I reserched the sleeve for over a year but after my last appt, the surgeon suggest RNY may be best for me. My upper GI showed a have paraesophageal hiatal hernia. 5 years ago I was scared of the RNY but the dr suggest I need a restrictive & malabsorption surgery. Actually they're right after I thought about over the past few days. Those that have had lap band revision to RNY, what was your recovery time like, did u have both procedures done at once & have you been successful with the weight loss? Any feedback is appreciative. Thanks

Our stories sound similar I did lap band 2/2010 lost 85 lbs fairly quick then last jan started having GERD & vomiting lots....fast forward 8/13/13 I revised to sleeve per my dr recommendation. I liked not having malabsorption...no advice about RNY but good luck. I have Done great with this surgery..I too was terrified but it was unmerited.....

Revision on 07/31/13

I am a new Lapband to RNY revision (07/31). My recovery was very fast. I was walking a mile 4 days out of surgery and 2 miles a day 7 days out. My surgeon released me from all restrictions 3 weeks out. My pain was constant but managable for the first week and maybe 1/2 that amount week two. In week 3, it was just minor. I am now getting back to more activity. I cycle quite a bit and am working on increasing my endurance. The biggest issue is the post-op diet does not support a large amount of physical activity without you running out of steam.  I will also mention that I was quite active before surgery and probably in better shape that many newly post-op WLS patients. I am convinced that being active during recovery makes it faster. -- Tom

Thanks for the reply...I wish you continued success. Hopefully I will have a decision soon. I am tired of this band and all the pain it causes.

I am almost 3 weeks post op revision to RNY. Had band placed in April 2006. I had all the usual long term problems with it - check out my profile for specifics. So far this has been the easiest recovery I've had and while I tire easily ( as the above poster said) I am very happy with my decision. Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions , I'm happy to share!
Hope this helps, Ashley

Have you spoke to a couple of surgeons that is familiar with your medical history? If so, what did they advise/suggest?

Yes and due to GERD issues and weight gain from sleeve, they suggest RNY. Thanks for your reply.

I had revision to bypass due to gerd caused by band. My surgeon said sleeve wouldn't be the revision surgery for me.

Thanks tdbull. The surgeon recommended the bypass would be better. I also have to have a hernia repair too.
