Having Revision from VBG to RNY
I never get replies from any of my posts but I'm trying again. I had a VBG 13 years ago and lost 150 pounds and kept it off till about a year ago and started gaining it back, 85 pounds so far. I didn't want to end up gaining it all back so I am having a revision on August 19th. My question is, I'm 65 and having the RNY this time. Have any ladies or men had a RNY done at this age and if so how did the surgery go? My surgeon says at my age I could have a harder time with surgery. I feel 100% that I'm doing the right thing so I guess I need to hear something good and have a little more encouragement doing this.
I'm also going for a revision - my story is a little different, but essentially very similar. I'm 36 and I worry about the complications...but I worry about diabetes and heart disease more.
I say listen to your intuition. I've seen a lot of folks in their 60's do just fine, and I'm sure you will too. :)

Thank you so much for your reply and the encouraging words. How far along are you in your process? I started my process last November so it's been a long one. I'm doing my 3 weeks liquid and August 7th I go for my nutrition class, then surgery on the 19th. I really feel like everything will go very well but it always helps to have the extra encouragement.
I've got my internist, nurse, dietician, and social worker appointments in August. I'm thinking September will be Optifast, then likely October for surgery. :)

Hi Pattycake,
I too have a VBG done in 2001 and am having a revision done Aug 6th to an RNY. I'm going to be 56 in Aug so I'm closer to your age. My thinking is that we have already been through WLS before and have experienced the difficult recovery. We have a better idea of what to expect and therefor may be better prepared at least mentally for what's ahead. I have always regretted not getting the RNY in the first place. It's the "Gold Standard" for a reason, we stand a better chance of success this time around with the RNY. I have been scared but realized yesterday that this is what I want and need. Lots of folks have done revisions from the VBG to the RNY and are doing very well. You will too! Your 65 years young and soon to be healthier!
Hope this helps,
Thank you so much for your reply. It does help alot to hear about other older people having the RNY and done very well. There is diabetes and heart problems in my family and I want to keep from having these as much as I can. Again, thank you. I will keep you in my prayers. Please do let me know how your surgery goes.
