It's a stricture!

Had a barium under fleuro this am. It took 30 min to get 30 ccs through! I am so aggravated! My doc says it is a stricture caused from scar tissue where the band was. He is hopeful that the meds/steroids/fluids will resolve the issue. If not, we will move on to Plan B - a dilation.

Anyone else have this? What was done to resolve the issue? How are you doing now?

Strictures are fairly common especially after having a band with all the scar tissue that builds up underneath the band. I'm surprised that they aren't just dilatating it right off the bat to get rid of it. Why make you suffer more? They don't happen to everybody but they aren't unheard of either. I'm so sorry you are going thru this! At least it is fixable and sometimes they have to dilate it more than once, just so you are prepared. Another thank you to your band!

Tonya,

So you are having trouble because of scar tissue? I wonder if I should bug my Doctor more, or just deal? Is there side effects for just leaving it be?

Yep.... Where the band was! I could see it plain as day!! It looked like a circus balloon that you make balloon animals with. You know the long skinny ones that have like a "nipple" at the end. That's my esophagus! Yippee!!

As far as bugging your doc - it could NEVER hurt to ask.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but of all the complications, a stricture is usually the easiest to fix.  I'm sure your doc has a reason for wanting to try to resolve it with meds first, but I'd press him a bit on how long you're suppose to wait.  The usual fix is a quick dilation, which leads to immediate relief.  Some people have to have multiple dilations, but I've never heard of anyone not getting over it.

In the meantime, make sure you don't get dehydrated!
