Anybody chose RNY over DS?
For ME, the best decision was the RNY after 9 years with the band. I'm such a sugar fanatic that I needed to do the surgery that would best keep me limiting my sugar intake. I'm 6 months out of surgery and doing fine. Since it was a revision, the loss has been a bit slower, but that's ok. I'm down 75 pounds. So, for ME, it was best surgery (I wanted the sleeve at first, but insurance wouldn't cover it and then I realized that I would probably do a repeat performance of my band sugar issues). I'm sure you'll find the best one for you and I hope it goes very well. It will :)

I chose the DS. One of the reasons was that I've seen too many RNY food plans and they eat the same thing in the same quantities that I was eating with the band (very small volume of lowfat food) AND many RNY'rs struggle with weight regain. I figured that if I was going to all the trouble of another surgery, I was sure as heck going to give myself a fighting chance to not only lose the weight but to keep a good chunk of it off I would have to do the DS.
I would say it depends on a lot of factors. What is your weight gain/obesity history? Your family history? How much are you trying to lose? I too wanted to make sure I never regain my weight and went with the DS. However, now in retrospect I regret it. I should have gone for another - less invasive surgery.
DS works in both restrictive and malabsorptive ways. I quickly lost all excessive weight and have been struggling trying to keep weight on. I've had problems with multiple vitamin deficiencies, being underweight, and some health problems which resulted from losing so much weight and constant vitamin deficiencies.I am now pregnant and considered high risk due to being anemic, hypoglycemic, having serious vitamin deficiencies, and not being able to gain enough weight. I look like those children you see on TV in African refugee camps - you can count my ribs and see all my bones, with a little belly bump. I am tall and my hands and arms look like a skeleton covered with nothing but skin and veins over the pure bones. I am considering a revision - elongation - after I have the baby. Just something to think about...
