I also had the VBG in 1999. I have gained alot of weight. I have spent the last year seeking help. My PCM put me in for Barium swallow, and Cardio.  I went to two informational meetings in the area to find a surgeon that does revisions.  I met with him and he did an EGD. I went back yesterday and he said he would put the info into my insurance who is Tricare.  They do not like paying for revisions. I have numerous reasons for the revision sucah as gastritis, fistula, hiatial hernia and i cant remember what all.  He made it sound like since I have mechanical issues not just over eating that caused the VBG to fail I stand a better chance of getting approve.

So start looking for a DR and get testing done and find out what went wrong.  He said he would remove most of my stomach like a sleeve, but i would only have a square portion and then do a bypass.

Good luck to you and keep us posted
If they are going to make a square portion of stomach, then do a bypass, you won't have ANYTHING like a sleeve!!!

Getting any type of bypass where they cut the pyloric valve out of the process, is prone to a whole set of problems you don't need. Read about the pylorus preserving surgeries like the sleeve and DS, and don't accept some mumbo jumbo from a surgeon that doesn't actually know how to do either of those, and will give you something "close enough". There are no similar procedures -  you either get a sleeve, or something completely different, so read up on the different surgeries, determine what you want to live with, and then find a surgeon that can do it.

I had a VBG in 2002 and went from 581 to 219 lbs. Then my parents passed, started having personal problems galore and put the 'fat suite' back on to cope with it all.

I talked with my new sergeon and he does DS and several other WLS but he said the only surgery he would do on me is RNY.

I got that done in March of this year and I am loosing again.

Just out of curiosity - why would he only do the RNY? How are you doing with the RNY?

Thanks for taking the time to answer. :)

My VBG was 'OPEN' and he said I was full of scar tissue on the inside and stated a DS just was not feasable for me.

Yeah, mine was open as well. I suppose the GI series will tell us more.

There is one surgeon in Ontario who does the DS, not sure of the name, I believe he is in Hamiliton. I have a friend in Ontario who is trying to get into that surgeon. I will ask her and find out more. I know nothing of the surgeon myself, but my friend does. I am Canadian and went to Brazil to get the DS.

Thanks, Heather! I appreciate it. :)

Wow, a trip to Brazil to have the surgery - must have been quite the experience!

DS on 08/11/12
I am from Alberta. I ended up going to Mexico for my DS. I had a lapband for 3 years which I had removed in February of this year. So far I am sooo pleased with my decision. Although I was self-pay, it was worth every penny. I researched getting the DS in Ontario, but from what I could tell the docs are in Hamilton and they don't take out of province patients. Also, I think you guys have a pretty long wait list for bariatric surgery. You probably know more than me, but unless you've already started the process but you'll have to ask yourself if you want to wait that long. As soon as I started doing my homework I was sure I wanted the DS and I was also sure I didn't want to wait months or years and be over 400 lbs before I got the surgery.

There is a light, not a train. Just can't say for sure how long the tunnel is.

Yes - I can totally understand why you went to Mexico to have it done. Honestly, if I can't get something done in a reasonable amount of time here, I'll have to look into how I can manage to do the same. I don't have unlimited funds, but for me, something like this is worth it.

I'd like to look into that avenue - where would be the best place to start that sort of research?

Thanks so much for your input. :)
