Revision out of pocket cost

Hello! I had RNY in 2005 and I recently met with a surgeon to discuss a possible revision.  The surgeon performed a endoscopy and found that my stoma has stretched and my pouch is almost 5 times it's original size.  It was decided that I would be a good candidate for a DS revision; however, I was informed that even with insurance, I would have to pay almost $35,000 out of pocket! Is this common for all surgeons who are qualified to perform a RNY to DS revision?

something doesn't sound right there.  They can't bill you extra because it is a revision unless the insurance won't cover.

I would get a second opinion.  There are only a few sugeons that do this surgery and i would trust.

PM smiley Jamie72 abouve and ask her opinion. She fought for many years to revise to DS

No.  Check out DSFacts.com.  There is a list of vetted surgeons.  An RNY to DS revision is very complicated and only a number of surgeons can perform them.  Please choose one from the list on DsFacts.  I just had my RNY to DS revision and it was fully covered.  I never heard of that.
Do research first.

Please look in my profile for a list of qualified RNY to DS surgeons.

All surgeons offices are different, and all insurance policies are different, but I do not think you would need $35,000.00 out of pocket UPFRONT.  That sounds WRONG!!!!

My quoted cash price for surgeon & 4 day hospital stay was $28,500.00 ~ No insurance, just cash, that would pay the entire surgery, and hospital~end of story.  Done deal

($11,000.00 surgeon)
($17,500.00 hospital 4 day stay)

Hello everyone & thanks for your responses!! I went to one of the qualified surgeons that is listed on DS facts (Dr. Elariny)!  My husband and best friend both thought that I should seek a second opinion because of the cost (overall cost almost $67,000 of which $35,000 would be out of pocket)! Now after reading your responses, I know that I need get a second opinion...now I have to decide between NY and CA!!!  Thanks again!!!

OMG! I am so glad to read your posting....I have been rattling my brain over this. I am a RNY patient seeking a revision to DS. I live in California and one of the best Dr's is 30 minutes from my home. I have insurance but I was told that his office does not work in network insurance??? So I would have to front some of the cost up front: $300 consultatation fee and possible $5000 to $10000. Please let me know who you find?? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

I ran across your post and was wondering did you ever get update or 2nd opinion.  The Doc you mention would be the closest to me.  Was that indeed the correct quote for the surgery?  How did everything go for you?
