WANT TO HEAR FROM ERNY'RS PLEASE

It has been an extremely long time since I posted on OH...I've been a member here since 2007...but went off the radar due to extreme negativity and criticism of others personal surgical choices. I have been through (3) major, open surgical weight loss procedures. Gastric Stapling in 1979...RNY in 1989 and ERNY in 2009. I would like to hear from anyone out there who has been through the RNY to ERNY surgical revision procedure and would like to know how they are maintaining, and how they are feeling...I'm not interested in hearing about how the ERNY is no good and that anyone considering revision should go with DS...That is just not a possibility for all people because of insurance coverage issues and other reasons maybe personal to the individual.

I'm just trying to compare my own weight loss and health journey with others who went down the same road...Would love to hear from all of you who have experienced the ERNY...

Thanks so much ...

Hi there!  We talked about a year ago.  I'm not really a ERNY.  I'm a bit of a hybrid.  I had a DS which was revised to lengthen the common channel from 100 cc to 200 cc due to some issues malabsorption was causing me.  My surgeon in his infinite wisdom also revised my sleeve, which he had made too large to begin with, leaving me with no restriction, to a RNY pouch.
I am about 21 months out and I have lost all my excess weight and then some.  Got too low, under 100 lbs.  I'm now about 105 lbs, working slowly to about 120-125 lbs.
My problems from malabsorption are largely gone.  No real issues due to my WLS.  I did have an incisional hernia that I needed to have operated on twice but other then that my health issues are pretty much related to me being a 54 year old post menopausal woman.  I do have osteoporosis, again not sure if it's related to my surgery or age.  Probably a bit of both.
So how are you doing?  Are things going good for you?  How is your weight doing?

Hi Tazz...I do remember talking to you a while back. So glad to hear you are doing so well. I have done well considering my type of surgery. I do suffer from some malabsorption but I'm told it's not severe. I'm not sure...When you were extremely malabsorbing what were your symptoms before they revised you? I have hovered around 136 for about 2.5 years now. I go up and down 5 lbs week to week...but if I see the 140+ on the scale I panic and scale back on my eating ... Would love to hear more of your story...Sounds so very interesting...I too am in my 50's...yuck can't believe it...Osteoporosis comes with low calcium and vitamin d so if you were experiencing low levals after the DS that may be why. I would love to keep in touch with you...

Thank you so much for your reply.

My worse problems seem to have come from chronic bacterial overgrowth in my intestines.  Something about the length of my common channel or perhaps the way the surgery was done caused this to be a constant problem with chronic diarrhea, noxious gas and some fecal incontinence.  Not pleasant at all.  Plus malnutrition and generally not being well, terrible fatigue, no quality of life at all.  Now the diarrhea is gone, no more terrible odorous gas, no incontinence, nutritional issues seem to be resolved.  I did have very low D and I didn't take nearly as much calcium as I should of so I am sure that contributed to my osteoporosis.  I still malabsorb given my weight.  I eat at least 2000 calories a day and I am slowly gaining.  I thought I would have to eat about 1500 calories a day to maintain around 130 lbs so that was a surprise.  I'm not very active right now so that isn't causing me to be able to eat more.  I am able to eat larger quantities so that is helping me gain some.  I am sure that I eventually will have to cut back my food to stay at a comfortable weight.

Janie,
I don't know if you know all my story or not.  I had my ERNY common channel revised to from 100 cm to approx. 200cm after I was severely malnourished.  I have low blood pressure, grey skin, tree trunk legs, just to name a few.  Either facebook me a message as I haven't been on here in awhile.  I got down to way below my goal weight and go deathly ill.  I still think I still have malnurishment/malnutrition problems.  I am seeing a sleep specialist who also does nutritional evals.  I see her next week.  Will be interesting to see what she found out.

Hi Deanne:

I would really be interested in talking with you...Give me a call on my cell 435-862-3927....

I never did find out how short my common channel was he said he wasn't sure after surgery...

I have had severe problems with leg/bone pain ... What are the tree trunk legs? I've never heard of that...but it sure doesn't sound good...Did you have pain with the malnutrition...Who did your reversal? How is your weight doing since the revision?

I had no idea that you went through a revision once again...Wow, I hope things are getting better...I would love to hear about all the issues you had...

Hey Miss!

I am doing horrible!  Weight loss stalled, but not gaining. But also still obese!

My levels are starting to drop, and I have developed some hypoglycemia symptoms that I will see an endo for  in May.  I have much trouble getting in protien, as it still feels bad when I eat meat.

I will get this revised hopefully by next year! Ins is not the problem for me, it's mosty family obligations at this time.

I remember you, and am sorry your not doing as well as you'd hoped. I hope you get some answers here.

There was another helpful ERNY revision, named something like JinPA. If she's around, she was always good about sharing information.
