DS or RYN?

i see my surgeon on the 17th - i had lapband in 2004 - lost from 226 to 185, but the last 2-3 years i have bounced between 192-206.  i am wanting a revision, but unsure which one.  i am thinking i would like the DS but i am concerned about controlling "smelly" gas and diarehha (which, from what i read, are common with the DS) - are any of you having that problem?

also - i have BCBS/Federal - when i talked w/the asst at the surgeon's office she said it would not be a problem at all to get the ryn approved.  at that time i had not considered the DS.  -- anyone out there know how BCBS/fed is on this one?

Could you not lose to a lower weight with a good working Lap Band?  If you could have and your band was failing you, you may want to consider another restrictive only surgery - the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy which is the first part of the Duodenal Switch.

You can get a Duodenal Switch with a smaller stomach and longer common channel.  OMG there are ways of taking care of yourself with the DS.  People have the wrong image.  If you watch simple carbs, take probiotics as needed, you can eliminate any issues.  A longer common channel seems to alleviate intestinal issues though once a DS, it is already distal.

Roux-en-Y RNY at your weight , I don't know it may not be a bad idea.

I wish you the best.

Smelly gas..... I currently have the RNY, and if I eat sugars or white flour.........  PLUG  YOUR NOSE!!!  I can peel paint!!!  This is no joke, it is TRUE.  I have no worries of being revised to the DS (if i ever get approved) in this area.  The gas I experience is from eating simple carbs & sugar.  If I eat "clean" I have no ill effects.  I work 40 hours a week & I do not want to have dibiltating gas while at work, so I watch what I eat.  It is VERY uncomfortable.  And, I also live by the rule of: "Don't trust a fart... ever"

This is all my opinion and my experiences.  Good luck in what you decide!!!!

i was really leaning towards the DS, but i called my surgeons office and they said he does lapband, sleeve and RYN only, so since i KNOW i want a malabobsorbsion, not just restrictive, i guess it will be RYN.  i am ok with that. my husband had it and many folks at work have done great with that one.

now i just have to see if the surgeon will DO it (i have a lot of scar tissue from other surgeries) and whether or not my insurance will cover (which his office staff says will be no problem)
