How soon is too soon to think revision?

I am starting to think that I may need a revision surgery.  I started out at 439 lbs, was 409 the day of surgery, and now, here I am 172 lbs lighter.  I will be 18 months out from surgery soon, and sadly, this is not even 50% of my excess weight.

I searched my insurance company's website, and found that they will pay for a revision 24 months after the original surgery, provided that I meet certain criteria, which I absolutely meet right now.  They require things such as patient's BMI would still qualify them for surgery, compliance with prescribed diet and exercise after the original surgery, etc.  I have been absolutely compliant -- I eat between 1200-1500 calories per day and I get 60 minutes of cardio every single day.  I feel right now like I'm adrift because I've been basically stalled for six months, and no one has given me any advice that has worked to break the stall. The NUTs at my surgery center tell me I should cut my calories to about 1000. I tried that and felt like I was going to pass out -- I usually burn about 3500 calories a day, according to GoWear Fit, and if I starve myself on 1000 calories I feel like I can't do anything.  My PCP thinks I'm not taking in enough calories and need to up it to 2000.  I'm not sure what to do, but I'm starting to think that the RNY has done all it can for me.

I'd appreciate any advice anyone could give me.  I know that RNY can work, I'm just thinking maybe there's only so much it can do for a heavyweight like me.  I'm not interested in band-over-bypass either.  I'm thinking that if I do revise it'll be to a DS.  I'm not sure if it's too soon to consult with a surgeon, or if I should wait until August when I'm 2 years out.

Thanks in advance.

I have an appt to see her again in early March, and I'm going to ask about it again.  I'm also seeing my PCP and endo soon too about it.  I'm not bad-mouthing her or RNY at all, I just worry I'm not going to get to "normal".

I'm not sure how soon is too soon-but for those of us over 400lbs all the articles I've read have led me to believe the DS should have been the original surgery for us. RNY does help many-but I know a few others personally that had the RNY and never got near their goal weight with it-myself included. Best wishes to you!

Thank you! Yeah, I'm thinking some kind of tweak is needed for us heavyweights. I hope you are able to get your revision!

You're quite welcome-thank you very much also! I'll be sure to post about my consultation with Dr. Hill after I see him on March 5th.

I had my RNY on July 9, 2007. In May 2008, I started researching a revision. I hit a stall and I never lost any weight after it.. I steadily gained weight.  I knew I'd have to wait for two plus years before I could have a revision, but in that time, I did plenty of research. The DS is hands down the best revision surgery to have! I should have a revision from RNY to DS surgery date this week! Your story is so similar to mine. My original surgeon looked at me cross-eyed when I mentioned a revision so early out; I was very compliant with my RNY and she and the nutritionist never doubted my eating habits, which was great. Please do your research when deciding on a revision surgery if you decide to have one. The DS board is a great source of information as is www.dsfacts.com Best of luck to you!

Dr. David Greenbaum in Willingboro, NJ will be my surgeon. His office number is 609.877.1737. Check out his website. www.southjerseybariatrics.com You will be glad that you did!

Thank you so much!  I live about 15 minutes from Dr. Greenbaum's office, and as I've started my research, his name has been coming up again and again.  Did you wait until you were 2 years out to see him?  I am wondering if I should make an appointment now or wait.

Thanks again, and best wishes with your revision -- I hope you get a date soon!
