Decisions are hard but I need advice

I am 11 years out of Gastric Bypass and have gained back 120. I lost 227 ( starting weight 403) and maintained that for 4 years and slowly climbed up to 200.
But after life altering situations and serious depression, I gained alot of weight. My depression has been resolved via many years of meds and therapy and learning many things. With the weight my health issues have returned, asthma, Serious Apnea, joint pain, skin issues.
Now I'm struggling again to lose the weight. My problem has always been very slow metabolic rate. I was able to maintain my weightloss only by extreme exersise. (Walking 8-10 miles 5 days a week) Having jobs where I was physcially active.
Not having a job, marriage change and lifestyle change created the perfect situation for weight gain but now that I'm in this place I need help.
I want a revision, Weightloss meds out. I'm vegatarian, Carb queen, {I know not great} But I can't eat meat due to my surgery making it hard and painful to digest. (I heard this was common from my doctor but I've yet to meet anyone else who has this trouble)
SO Meds, out. I exersised and walked and lost 30 but gained that back. I know with help I could get smaller and than exersise more comfortably and have less discomfort on my joints.
The overall thought for me now is that at 45, starting my life anew, single and in college, I want to continue with the positive life style but feel stuck in this issue without ability to move forward to the happy life I know was there as a thinner person.

IMO you need a revision to DS.

I had and lived with gastric bypass / RNY for 28 years, had it done in 1980. Like you I couldn't eat meat very well and ended up living on soft carby foods like pizza and pasta. I managed to keep the weight off for 15 years with a lot of exercise and restriction on what I would eat. But when I got sick and couldn't exercise every day, I lost control and ended up gaining it all back.

I got a revision to DS in Sept. 2008 and it's like heaven, no more damn pouch problems, no more dumping, I eat like a normal person, I've lost the excess weight and I feel fantastic; it's like I'm 30 again.

Here's a link to my 1 year out post:

You need to contact Dr Greenbaum and consult with him; here's his contact information:

David Greenbaum, MD, FACS
Email: [email protected]
Surgical Specialists of New Jersey, LLC
Rancocas Division
1000 Salem Rd., Suite A
Willingboro, NJ 08046
Phone: 609-877-1737

It's a difficult revision to go from RNy to DS, but Dr. Greenbaum is one of the few who can do it.

I agree with Kerry. You didn't regain back all, which is great, but you are struggling and your metabolism is low. I can definitely sympathize with that.

Dr. Greenbaum has done many revisions, and he knows what he's doing. Not too many doctors out there specialize in revisions, so it's best to consult with someone who does. I felt very good about everything I discussed with Dr. Greenbaum, and I feel I made the best choice for me. I'm 44, went to Dr. Greenbaum weighing 221 (down from 328 pre-RNY), and I was so miserable because of weight gain and esophageal issues. I feel like I got my life back.

I sure understand where you are coming from! I had RNY done on 10-31-03 and was over 400lbs the day of surgery. I have been steadily gaining back weight. My lowest weight was 195lbs and I'm back up to 220lbs. I am now consulting a different surgeon to do a revision. I wanted to have the DS done from the beginning-but none of the doctors around here were doing it. I'm hoping when I see this other surgeon on 3-5-10 he will be able to do a revision to the DS. I was told the DS would help me more-but of course couldn't get it done at the time with my BMI being over 80!

It's a hard decision to make and many people look at those of us that need a revision for one reason or another as failures-I don't see us like that and I hope you don't either! Best wishes to you!

*hugs*
