I had Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass in 2001 I lost from 455 down to 219 then was forced to gain weight when I was pregnant 3 concecutive times one was miscarrage 2 live births. I have regained back to 345 and need revision, My stoma is severly dilated and I actually never have food in my stomach ever anymore they did upper and lower GI on me and said the fluids shoot straight through me..When I have flu or illness and vomit it comes from my intestine which can be extremely dangerous to my health with the bateria. I am borderline diabetic, anemic, have hemipalegic migraines, I have PCOS(polycystic ovarian syndrome), depression, GURD, and GAD(generalized anxiety disorder). I am a divorce mom of 2 beautiful autistic boys and need to lose at least 120 lbs to keep up with them. My original surgin is retired and he said b4 he retired if he had it to do over again he would have done some surgery I forget the name of but he said it would have bypassed the entire stomach and you feel no hunger you eat only because you have to not because you feel hungry it is one long valve. I have Molina so I will probibly have to go though UC Physician group again for the revision however it is serious to my health weather it is approoved by insurance or not I am will ing ot make a payment plan with a doctor to fix the problem if need be I am disabled so I have a steady income . Any suggestions on which surgery or any doctors who could help me please email me at [email protected] my profile shows my recent pic and my boys pictures. Happy Holidays.

Thankyou,
Mary

The surgery your prior surgeon was talking about isn't done any more because it has too many bad consequences. I revised from a 1980 gastric bypass / RNY in Sept. 2008 to the DS Duodenal Switch. It's been great, I've lost all my excess weight, I feel great and I can eat like a normal person.

I would recommend you check out the DS Duodenal Switch Forum and www.dsfacts.com to get a better idea what it's all about. The DS has the best weight loss and best percentage of maintenance of any of the weight loss surgeries. It also has the most forgiving eating.

You can also check out my profile if you want to see what I've been through and what I look like today.

I had the minigastric bypass done 7/2000 and no problems until 6 months ago when I developed a constant horrible taste in my mouth and on my tongue.  Also had reflux episodes, including one  ER visit.  GI doc has tried every prescription, it is getting worse.  Got referred to a bariatric surgeon but he is young with just 5 years operating.  I have maintained good weight loss and am stunned at the prospect of open abd surgery.  Your post is encouraging.  Can you give more info about your experience and recovery?  I live in Houston, TX; the dr. who did the surgery is out of state now so don't want to go there.  Thanks.

Sure,

My case was a very difficult one; as I mentioned above I had my stomach stapled and a loop bypass similar to what's shown in this sketch of a Mini Bypass:

images.google.com/imgres

The only difference I can see is that my stomach was not cut in two; just stapled off. The staple line pulled out or tore out back in 1981-82 and I almost bled to death; got a transfusion etc. You can read all about it on my profile if you want more details.

Anyway; back to the revision surgery. It was a difficult operation because of all the adhesion's, scar tissue and damage from the old staples. The first surgery took 8 1/2 hours and I had to have a second surgery which took 4 1/2 hours. The recovery was also difficult and I really didn't start feeling OK for about 6 weeks. But after I got over the recovery hump, things just got better and better. Now; I'm feeling better than I've felt since I was 30, it's wonderful to be free from the pouch and all the problems it gave me. Again, check my profile and you can see the difference in what I looked like before the surgery, right after and now. You can also see and read about it here:

Revision surgery should not be taken lightly and should only be done by very experienced surgeons, but it can be done safely and it can change your life for the better.

Here are a couple of surgeons in TX that are very experienced you may want to consult with one or both of them:

Hi,
I'm two weeks out from RNY revision surgery with Dr. Wilson.  He did my original RNY in 2004.  I'm very pleased with his skill as a surgeon and as a person.   He uses a Davinchi robot during surgery.  I would recommend Dr. Wilson to anyone.  Since he is with UTMB (a teaching facility) the office & staff is somewhat different than other Drs offices.  Not bad, just different.

cmdfnp, you are probably experiencing bile reflux. This is one of the big reasons that so few bariatric surgeons do the mini - gastric bypass, and that this operation is not accepted by the bulk of the bariatric surgery community. It's a serious complication that will most likely not respond to any of the many available meds for acid reflux because bile is not an acid - it's a base, the opposite of an acid. So the only effective treatment will be surgery.

I am very sorry you are going through this. I would strongly suggest that you take a good look at all the available revision options, and wish you the best of luck.

In your case, DS.  Without a doubt DS.  If your insurance does not cover it I would suggest Dr. Ungson in MX.  DSers love him, he has a great deal of experience.

another happy revision to DS here.. do your homework, come check out the ds board, ask questions and make sure you know what surgery will work best for you.. the DS isn't a one size fits all but fits most.  some people like to dump.. so the DS isn't for them at all........

Ricki, I'm interested in the source behind this statement, "...some people like to dump..." - I'm a long term RNYer and I have yet to run into anyone who likes to dump - perhaps what you mean to say is that some people are grateful that dumping or even the prospect of dumping keeps them away from eating crap food? Just looking for clarification - thanks. Maureen
