Those of you who know the story of what happened to me last Wednesday when I went in for my repair and revision surgery I need your help with coming up with questions to ask my surgeon.

I have been brainstorming, but I am stuck.

Please let me know if you can think of any others.

Thank you all for your support and understanding.

I hope you all are having an absolutely fabulous day.

1.       Why did you not come back to speak to me about why my
surgery was not completed like you told my mother
you would after I woke up/before I was discharged from
          the hospital?

2.      What was done to my abdomen (was my fistula repaired)
          while I was under?

3.      What caused our original plan to revise me to a distal
          bypass to change?

4.      What does my intestines look like (am I proximal or
distal - how much was bypassed)?

5.      Was their any scar tissue or adhesions noted and if so, how
much and/or if there were possible areas of concern where
          hernias might develop?

6.      How would how my intestines are now have affected
revising me to a distal bypass?

7.      Are you just not comfortable doing the distal bypass
revision on me based on the way my intestines are?

8.      What type of revision can you do now based on how my
          intestines are?

9.      What percentage of weight can be lost with this new plan
          for revision?

10.      What are the complications with this new plan for
          revision?

11.   I know that you have referred some of your more difficult
cases before to Dr. David Provost. Do you think that he
would be able to do my revision to distal based on how
        my intestines are?

12. How was everything billed with my insurance company and
due to this issue will I be having to pay any additional out of
      pocket expenses because of it?

Honey child, looks like you covered it all. The first question in particular is the first one I'd ask. I first day of surgery, even though she had my husband deliver the news about not beinging able to procede with the RNY, she made sure she saw me later in the day to explain the situation to me fully. You doctor did you wrong for leaving you hanging like that. We're praying for you!

Francine,

Thank you very much girlie.

I thought he was wrong as well for not seeing me at all that day to explain anything to me before I was discharged from the hospital.

I will update you later on tomorrow.

Hi Teena,
I think you have a good comprehensive list of questions and I agree with Francine about #1.  I have a problem with the surgeon leaving without taking the time to update you on what just happened, but instead stringing you along for a week to get answers.  That in my opinion is in poor taste  You will have your opportunity to confront him on this on the 9th.  Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Maryjo,

Thx.

I feel the same regarding the way the break down with communication happened.

I know there are emergencies that happen sometimes, but even then say that was the case and apologize over the phone and they tell me what actually happened in the OR and why surgery was not completed at that time.

This did not happen and I need to know why and I need to know if this is going to happen again.

I will be sure to update you.

I hope you are feeling much better.

 Hey Teena,

You might want to also ask if while he was performing his surgery last week if there was any scar tissue or adhesions noted and if so, how much and/or if there were possible areas of concern where hernias might develop?  I know these cir****tances can have an effect on what kind of revision a surgeon is willing to perform.

I am also with the others....confront him on his doctor/patient ethics letting you leave without informing you of what was going on....

Good luck and I look forward to your update.

Teena

Just  a suggestion if you dont already have it.    make sure to get a copy of the O.R. report  for your own records. that way whatever road you take  - you have the written documentation of what was done  that day.

I feel that something good is going to come your way... It might take a little while .. But it's coming.
