My story

In 1993 at the age of 21, I had vertical banded gastroplasty. The staple line
broke down and I had it redone again in '94, and had a revision in 1996 due to
excessive vomiting. I had lost 150 pounds and regained 100. I'm now 36 and this
past March 12, I had DS done by Dr. Lutrzykowski in Michigan. We knew it would
be a challenge due to my past surgeries, and it was. He was unable to remove the
entire band that was around my stomach, and there was a weak area with a leak.
On March 21, he did surgery again to attempt to fix the leak but it failed. He
said usually it would heal itself in 6-8 weeks. It has now been 12 weeks and I
have had 2 fibrin sealant applications and it is still leaking. I have a drain
in my abdomen that collects what I take in, which is just diluted apple juice
and popsicles (I miss food!). I have a PICC line that "feeds" me TPN 18 hours a
day and also 3 daily IV antibiotics. I've been in and out of the hospital
repeatedly in the last 3 months - somewhere around 47 days total. I just had a
pulmonary embolism that returned 2 days after I was discharged. I've lost a
little bit of weight so far, but that's the least of my worries right now.

I guess I would just like to know if anyone else out there has had to deal with
anything like this and what your experience was.

Thank you.
Micki

Hi Micki:

So are you saying you had a Stapling in 93, they redid the Stapling in 94, and then a revision in 96...What did you revise to in 96? And, now you have had another revision to DS in 09?

That is unbelievable, were all these surgeries open? I have had a 3rd WL Surgery. 2 Revisions beginning with Gastroplasty, then Revised to RNY, now revised to ERNY. I can't even begin to imagine what you've been through.

Leaks are very common with DS Revisions due to the extreme trauma created from prior surgery. You hang in there and we will be saying many prayers on your behalf...

Please keep us updated...

Janie - The "revision" was basically removing the too-small band and replacing it with a bigger one.

Thanks :)

ERNY is where the doctor increases the amount of intestine bypassed to increase your malabsorbtion component .  Usually leaving you with a common channel ranging from 50 cm to 150 cm in length.  This portion of the procedure is much like the DS intestinal conduit without the revision to the pouch.

Micki!  WOW and I do mean WOW!  What a ride you have had to endure!  I am very sorry to hear of your troubles.

I haven't had to deal with the type of issues you have but just wanted to say I surely hope things turn around for you, your troubles become less and your joys become more....

I will send a prayer your way.
