Revision Surgery in Atlanta, GA area?

It has been almost 7 years since my bypass and life has been good.  I lost about 165lbs and have kept all most all of it off until about 6 months ago.  My life went spiraling out of control when hubby lost his job.  Within the last 6 months or so I have began to gain weight and have put on over 20 pounds.  I know that my pouch has stretched out; it has been that way for a while now, however I have managed to keep the weight off until now.  I can eat huge amounts of food.  Would a Dr. even consider a revision with only about a 20 or 25lb. gain?  If so, who in or around Atlanta is good besides Celio Burrowes (original surgeon-didn't have good experience) Paul Macik (another bad experience; not WLS related.).  Dr. Daly has done other surgeries on me, not WLS, and I like him - however, I do not have the 2500 for follow up?  Dr. Champion is sooo busy.
One other question; has anyone been approved while o a COBRA?  I am just beginning to look into this but I am so very afraid of a huge weight gain..........................

I have heard very good things about Dr. Champion from my surgeon and others. Even though he is busy, he may well be worth the wait. The surgeon that is about to do my Mini-Gastric Bypass to RNY revision uses a lap band on top of RNY surgeries for people who have gained weight and is having really good results.

Unfortunately, for me, I have spoke with the bariatric nurse at a local doctors office.  She said that in the guidelines that I have to have a BMI of over 40 - I don't.  My BMI is only 28.  She says that I will not be able to find anyone who will do it.  I'm bummed out.  I have started to exercise and watch what I eat more.  I have fallen back into bad habits.

I can hear your frustration in your typing! Sorry. I went to a seminar recently with a Dr. in Pensacola, FL because I am seeking a revision from MGB to RNY. He had a lady who works for him get up and speak, and she mentioned that she had had Gastric Bypass years earlier and had gained back about 35 pounds (I'm pretty sure that I heard that amount right). She said that Dr. Lord did a lap band over her RNY, and she was able to take the weight back off.

You would have to self-pay unless you met the weight requirements of your insurance company or had other complications to show that you needed a revision, but as I understand it, many surgeons are doing lap band over RNY to control weigh regain.

I hope you are able to find an answer. Diet may indeed be your best option for now if you can't self-pay for surgery. You could get 25 pounds off in a couple of month. I know it's easier said than done, but you really sound motivated!

I am so not good at dieting and I hate exercise.  Of course, that is what got me to 300lbs. in the beginning.  I thought after the RNY that I would never, ever have to diet again.  Wrong!  I'm trying, bad habits are soooo hard to break.  It is only when I have ate way to much that I feel full.  I wish I could shrink my pouch myself :)

Been there, done that!

No revision docs in our area.  That is revision from one surgery to another.  Dr. Williams will "tighten up" and RNY. Dr. Maynard or is it Dr. Dennis Smith??? will do an extended RNY.  One or the other (Smith or Maynard) won't even touch a revison.

But if you are looking for one that does...say revision from RNY to DS, there aren't any.

I went to Dr. Husted in KY.  It's a good drive (6-7 hrs) but totally and completely worth it!!!

Good luck with your research!!!!!!

So, you went from a RNY to a DS?  Was Kentucky the closest DR. that you could find?

If you don't mind me asking, how much weight had you regained & what was your BMI at the time of your revision?

I have talked to Dr. Smith's nurse.  She is the one who told me that my BMI would have to be over 40 and it is 28.

Thanks for posting,
Sonya

Yes, KY was the closest.  AND because Dr. Husted is a mirical worker with revisions.  Also, I have seen both of his shows on Discovery Health...and thought he was a cutie pie!  But really, I would almost say that he is a specialist in revisions.  Not that he's "the best" (*I* think he is ***smile***) but he's at least *one of* the best.

Not sure what my BMI was but it was over 40...I'm thinking 45 or so??

BMI of 28?? OMG girl why are you even looking?

I know...I know...it scares the hell out of you, the very thought of becoming obese again...am I right?

Good luck, but I think you are going to find that if the insurance doesn't require a BMI of XX, then the doc will.
