I have mixed emotions, excitement, nervous, a little ticked off.

This will be the beginning of my new life, I keep telling my self.  It will be great to stop taking diabetes and high blood pressure medication.  It will be fantastic to be able to buy new clothes and not be depressed about how I look.

This will be a revision from Lap Band to VSG.  Unfortunately, this will not be covered by my insurance BCBS Federal Employee Plan    .  I had the lap band done in April 08   The band does not work for everybody.  I followed the rules and yes, once in a while I ate what I was not supposed to, I'm not perfect.  I still kept going and there were no more results.  At first some weight came off, then I gained it all back.  I was always, hungry and it was not HEAD hunger either.    BCBS FEP says the VSG is still under investigation, they will not pay for it.  I have read some people here on this forum say that BCBS FEP paid for theirs.  I'm just not getting it............  Anyway, I will be sleeved in the morning Oklahoma Time 7:00 am.  I will keep you all posted.  Keep me in your prayers  Thanks.

Good Luck!!!!

I have popped onto the lapband board a few times, and spoke with Vicki on there (Midwestern girl told me about her).

Have you had any appeals with the insurance denial?  Over on the DS messageboard, there is a wealth of information there too, for insurance-related topics

I will keep you in my prayers.  I have BCBS Fed here in Louisiana and they covered my revision to revise my stoma only.  I also have a 2nd insurance.  Do they cover any revisions or they are just denying the one you want?

Take care of you,

Carmen

I'v called and read the medical policy for BCBS FEP Oklahoma they do not cover VSG.  Yes, they do cover revisions except the one I  wanted  - VSG, they say it is experimental and under investigation.

I was self paid.  I did  not want to be of course, it cost  $12,500.  The doctor is out of network so BCBS FEP will not cover it.

Since there was nothing wrong with my lap band the insurance would not have covered the revision anyway.

In your case, I guess you needed to get your stoma fixed, BCBS FEP covered yours. You were very fortunate.

ON ANOTHER NOTE:
Just got home at noon today from the hospital.  I had no complications and I feel pretty good.  A little pain and acid reflux.   Now I'm on the bench!!!

Thanks for keeping me in your prayers Carmen.

Hi, my name is April. I just had an endoscopy and found that my pouch from the rny was still in tact but stoma was stretched. I have BCBS fed as well, how was your stoma revised. My Dr. is suggesting self modification, no revision, but I know me, I need restriction!

Glad you're doing well after surgery but fight, fight, fight the insurance company. Fed BCBS does cover VSG but the local BCBS offices that manage the claims don't always know that. There are 12 states where the local insurance offices process them correctly. It's worth fighting. They've been covering VSG since January 2008.

You would think that BCBS fep is the same all over the country.  NOPE NOT.   It varies from state to state.  That is such a duuuuh.   Anyway, some have gotten the sleeve with BCBS fep in some states.   I figure you have two options.  Challange the denial based on precedent from other accepted BCBS fep patients who have been approved.....or......find a surgeon in one of the states where it has agreed to pay.     The other problem may be that you may not be considered qualified because you may not be deemed a failure based on regained weight alone.  You may need to show medical complication from your original surgery.   Ha.   I think they require a psych evaluation to make sure you are able to handle the stress of dealing with insurance quirks.
