Trying to find a way to pay for the revision

Hey all,

I have been trying to find out a way to get a revision surgery that I need. I called my insurance company and they told me that they do cover this surgery. My Dr. said I have a good case to put in front of them to try to get them to pay for some of it. But really I don't think they will pay for it. So my best bet is to try to find another way to pay for it. I can't afford to pay for it out of pocket. But has any one been able to get a second insurance company to help pay for the surgery? If you have how did you go about doing it? Also what company did you use? How long did it take for the insurance to kick in and all? any idea's will be helpfull.... Thanks so much

I would try submitting it anyways, it can't hurt, I was told mine was excluded at first also, and It was not.  Sounds like your doc is on board to help you.

Good luck!

Hi Chelly:

I have a secondary which is: United American Healthcare. It is a major medical policy and costs me about $247.00 per month. If you go out and get secondary health insurance and immediately submit for a revision I can tell you that they are going to red flag you for sure and will say you are fraudulently seeking payment for a revision.

So what I did was this. I went to them openly told them I had both a Gastric Stapling in 1979 and a revision to RNY in 1989. When I applied for the insurance I  told them I was taking out the insurance because nothing in my primary policy would cover any complications from WLS and they did not pay for WLS at all. Therefore I needed a supplimentary policy to cover anything for future issues. Interestingly enough they told me that if the surgery was over 10 years old they couldn't use it as a pre-existing anyway. So they covered me and I've had this insurance over a year now. They will cover my hernia, bowell obstruction and revision.

Hope this helps.

Hi Janie,  Just a question if you dont mind. Is the DS to lose a larger amount of weight , I honestly do not know were to begin researching . I need to lose about 80 lbs and my suergeon is sending a letter to blue cross to see if they will cover my revision .I had a peferred ulcer in 06 and I think that is what he has based his info on . I have gained like 77 lbs back of my orignal weight . I had an RNY/LAP in May of 04 . Anyway thank you . Beth

I'm not sure where you live, but honestly if traveling is an option for you....I would go to a specialist. Unless your Dr. has done hundreds and I mean literally hundreds of revisions from RNY I wouldn't even consider a revision with him. Nothing against your DOC just good solid advice from a person who knows the difference of getting an experienced surgeon vs. one who only knows maybe one revision type.

DS is an excellent type of Revision for RNY and has excellent stats on long term weight loss. But it is risky and more expensive and their are only two handfulls of Surgeons to  my knowledge that does this procedure on a proven level.

I have between 60-65 lbs and I hope more to lose on my yet 3rd revision scheduled May 20th and I am going with an ERNY...simply because of all my previous abdominal surgeries. I have been researchinig this decision since 2006...Take your time unless you are in great peril...don't jump into things there are many options and more coming down the pike.

Good luck, I'm here for you and so are many, many others on this site.
