I am confused. Some of us are having band over RNY.Some are having RNY over the band.
I had RNY in 2004.I lost 92 lb.For the past two year I gained 44 lb. I spoke to my Dr. and she told me to do a band over. But now I read about what problems some of you have from the band. I am completly confused.
Any help  and advise are  welcome.
Thank you

Have you considered the DS?

I had a gastric stapling in 1982, lost 120lbs and gained it back.  I am scheduled to have a band put over my old stapling (bypass).  There are several people on this forum and on the lap band forum that have had this done with success...I hope and pray that one day soon I am one of them.  My surgery is scheduled on 12/10.

The other option might be to have your RNY made more distal - either to a distal or to an extended. This would add malabsorbtion to what restriction you already have. DS would do that too, but you might not need it depending on what is wrong with your RNY.

I'd also suggest you talk to a different surgeon, one who specialises in revisions. No disrespect to your surgeon, but if they did the original op and it wasn't a raging success I don't think I'd trust their sole opinion a second time.

Thankfully, I haven't gained the weight back but I am having a revision because my orignal surgeron left me with what is called a "blind-loop".  Well, it decided to attach itself to my actual pouch so now I have two.  I am in constant pain when I try to eat and from the time I wake up in the morning to the time I go to bed I have the most awful heartburn/reflux.  I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy (well, maybe the orginal doctor who told me it was in my head!)

I am having my revision on 12/26/08 and hopefully I will be able to function like a normal person!

Don't do the band.  If the band fails you are going to be back for another surgery.  I see the band as a useless piece of crap that some day will break.  Go for the DS and have only one surgery that you know will work and won't break.  I know because I have a band that broke and I wish I had gotten the DS first.  But this is my opinion and the way I feel about the band.  The band may work for awhile but one day it will fail or your will get a slippage or erosion and then it's back to the hospital.

I think the band is absolutely horrible for a primary surgery but band after folks (band over bypass) do not seem to have the problems that people with a band around their entire stomach seem to have.

The only way I would ever get another band is if bypass failed.  I personally would not get DS..
