 Hi
I am having my revision on Monday to the DS from the VBG. I had the VBG done 10 years ago.

I had the VBG back in /87 and went from 260 down to 113 for several years maintaining.  Like most the old way of doing it caused the staple line to disrupt after the first 2 - 3 years.  I still kept the weight off after from sheer dieting until several years later when I started regaining with the pregnancy from hell. lol

In /06, I had a revision to the Lap-Band and went from 251 day of surgery down to 126,  20 months later reaching goal in Dec. /07.  Now I have lowered my goal and weigh 123, though I have gone as low as 117.6 lbs.  Being at good restriction I still eat most all foods but satisfied with small portion and love not having to worry about malabsorption.

Best wishes with whatever surgery you may end up revising to.

Does the restriction you feel with the band feel similar to the restriction you had with the gastroplasty?

It's hard to compare the restriction because the staples were so long ago.   Certainly if you overeat the pain in the chest is very similar.  I prefer the band but it takes a few weeks to get a fill level that provides good restriction also with the band some days it loosesns or tightens on it's own.   When the band works well I can feel satisfied with a small portion of food but you don't want to try for that old feeling of being stuffed.

Also unlike the stapling you can keep a good level of fill to not feel hungry but with the old stapling over time the staples started to separate and you began to eat more and more.

I had an appointment with a surgeon that I had spoken with 3 months ago.  He said they did revisions, and that I should go to the seminar first.  I did, and I spoke to his partner there who said everything sounded good, so make an appointment to come in and get things rolling.  So, after waiting 3 months to get an appt, he tells me they've decided not to do revisions.  Man, was I depressed.  I won't use the kind of language on a public forum that I yelled once I got back in my car.  Screwing with people like that can drive someone suicidal.

After a couple of days, I dusted myself off and have found another surgeon that has done them before, and has no problem handling the insurance for it.  So I plan to see him, but will be more emotionally guarded this time.

Wow Mercator,

I had the same thing happen me too!!!! After the Doctor got my hopes all high! He told me he didn't feel comfortable doing surgery on me. Because was not sure what he would find when he  he would do Lap on me or if he would have to open me up!

Well he knew from the beginning that I had numerous stomach surgery's I told him it up front!! I was so upset.. I cried all the way home!! 3 of my 4 C- Sections were done very low, across my pelvic area. And my breast surgery was up high!! So I had only 3 real stomach Surgery's. That would be considered in the area of where the lap surgery would be done. From rib cage down to belly button area.

I  still do not want to put down that I have a new surgeon as I do not want to have to change it again!!! I had 2 Doctor's name on my profile already. I am on guard now.

I had stomach stapling done in Feb 1992. I was told I had to see a dietitian at their hospital! Yea right!! she was totally against WLS!!! All she did was try to tell me that anyone who does this surgery is weak and looking for the easy way out! Wow was she ever so wrong!!!

I was 388 pounds went down to 190 for a minute. then up to 210 for several years, then up to 220 for several more years. I gained 21 more pounds now and weigh 241. I have been at that weight for a while now.

Yes I have kept a lot of weight off! But mainly because I was throwing up often. I now tend to eat easier foods and softer foods and melt in your mouth too.. But that means they are fattening  too. So I have to be careful! I do not want to gain any more weight back. My tummy does not do well with beef, pork, and 50% of the time chicken and turkey. It is a hit and miss thing. Am I crazy or what!!! It is a big waste of money for me to go, or for anyone to take me to a food buffet! I can't get enough to eat off them.

So is it Possible for me to have surgery after all my surgery's or not??

Oh and another thing I had all these surgery's except TWO before my WLS in 1992! So what is the big deal now with having the surgery now????  One surgery was for cancer of the uterus in 1996. And the other was for a tummy tuck in 1995, which was done very very low on my stomach.
Thank you for any help from anyone... Alizka

1st goal to be under 200. Done!  2nd goal to be just obese. Third goal is to be under 170 by Thanksgiving 2009. I Pray I can make it. I know the Lord will help me through this.

I kept my weight off for about a decade, but at some point my staple line failed.  At least I assume it did, since I can eat as much of anything as I want now.  I'm 100 lbs heavier than I was before the first surgery.  I think it's working out for the best.  The doc I'm with now is actually a friend of a friend and we know a lot of the same people.  I have a good feeling.   Just trying to jump through the insurance hoops now, but I'll self-pay if I have to.

This doctor said the chance that he'd have to open me up was so tiny that he doesn't even want to mention it.   He said virtually any WLS can be done lap, it just depends on the patience of the surgeon.  It may take quite a bit of adhesion take down, but he said it was no big deal.

I'm at 450 lbs. now, and I'd just be happy to be back at the 325 I was before my first surgery. :-)

The habit of eating mushy high carb foods will defeat any kind of surgery.  Even before my staple line failure I had to battle with that.  I quickly found that salad was tough to get down, but ice cream was easy.  The truth is, if I'd been much of a salad eater, I wouldn't have been in that position.   Be careful with the throwing up.  It is bad for you in a number of ways (tooth decay, esophageal erosion,  damage to blood vessels).  I got to where I threw up so easily that all I had to do was lean my head forward.  I finally got a grip on that and taught myself what it was like to feel full and slow down my eating.

The bottom line is that the surgery isn't a fix-all.  It's just a tool.  I'm miserable enough now that I'm going to take whatever tool the surgeon can give me and try to get healthier.

Best of luck to you on your journey.
Robert
