The duodenal switch provides the highest percentage of excess weight lost and the highest percentage of excess weight loss maintained long term. Because the pyloric valve remains intact, there are none of the problems associated with dumping. The complication and mortality rates are statistically the same as for other weight loss surgeries. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions or join us on the DS board here. From the Paclap site;

Duodenal Switch

LapDS reconfigures the intestines so fewer calories are absorbed and reduces the capacity of the stomach so that food intake is restricted resulting in progressive, sustained weight loss. The stomach is reconstructed into a cylindrical tube, allowing more room for food compared to purely restrictive bariatric procedures thus permitting an eating pattern and diet much closer to normal.

Our surgeons developed a method of using the laparoscope to perform this procedure, resulting in smaller incisions, minimal scarring, less discomfort, faster recovery and shorter hospital stay.  The Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch achieves an average loss of 50 percent of excess body weight at six months and 90 percent at two years.  By combining moderate restriction and moderate malabsorption, the LapDS minimizes complications associated with older bariatric procedures and limits weight regain seen with other procedures. Learning about the DS

Here are some websites that were helpful for me in my search for the DS. Some have animations, some do not. Some have pictures, and one even has a video of the actual surgery (Dr. Smith's).

If you're just learning about the DS, I'd like to suggest the Dr. Hess website first.

Dr. Hess (suggestion: select PowerPoint presentation)

Dr. John Rabkin (gives an excellent speech with PowerPoint presentation on his website, and he explains the pros and cons of the Lap Band, RNY (gastric bypass), vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and the Duodenal Switch.)

Not a DS , more a Extended RNY , he is just going to move the connection down the road .. leaving a lot less common channel than I hsve now.  He will also be  cleaning up any adhesions from Previous surgeries  (hsterectomy )  and spur on my weight losss !!! yipeee I went to Dr Schlesingers weight loss support group today ... Its so nice to have a Dr show up for their groups and have open conversations witht them.
