Forgive my ignorance---is revision strictly for Lap Band

I had the RNY in April 2004.  I lost 90 lbs.  Then I lost my father in August 2005.  I became extreemly depressed.  I have put 80lbs back on.  Someone mentioned having a revision, but what I have read here, it is for Lap Band Proceedures. Is there any type of corrective surgery for those that have had RNY and gained weight?  Any advice from anyone?  Thanks and have a peachy day!

I've done so much research recently that I can almost answer with 100% certainty.  I had RNY 8 years ago and know that a revision IS NOT just for Lap Band folks.  Some w/ a failed RNY turn to a Lap Band actually. First step I think is to go to your PCP discuss your concerns, returned co-morbidies, etc. and have them send you for an Upper GI to see how your pouch is working and go from there with finding the right surgeon for you. I highly suggest you do your own research on which revisional surgery would be best for you...most of us lean towards a Lap Band or a DS. Good luck to you and keep us posted!

Hi Sharon: I am sorry about your father.  That is a tough loss. From my understanding, you can get a revision from RnY to a Lap Band or to a DS which is a more difficult procedure.    I lost 80lbs from open RNY 5 yrs. ago and have put back on 26-29lbs.  Initially, I was looking at Stomaphyx or Eros procedures which were appealing becasue they're non or minimally invasive.    However, I'm now starting to seriousy consider DS which I believe may have the best long-term results.  There are some risks in the revision to a DS which, ideally, I would like performed laparoscopically.  But given the risks, I'll go along with an open DS if that's the doctor's preference. Will keep posting as I get further into the process.

Please read my profile.  My revision was from RNY to DS in Aug 06.  Here's another link you who need revisions could use:

That's a great article with tips on getting insurance to cover your revision.  Thanks for posting it!!

How funny you said that.  I made an appointment yesterday afternoon for the 19th for a consultation.  I read his profile and was really pleased with the possitive remarks.  I am concerned about the 1,000 dollars you have to pay up front.  I do not know why you would have to do this if insurance will pay. I will get the answers on the 19th I guess.   Question on an earlier comment, what is DS?

I paid it, He asked me if I wanted to chance ins turning down for a reveision or just req a lap RNY. I said do whatever it takes, But the $1000 is cheaper than some have paid I talked to. They say the are not reimbursed for the extra time, But I saved $100 a paycheck, then hubby gave me the rest from his stash. DS is on another forum, they have lots of good info, I wish I had considered it before now, riskier but better longterm results, I think, Duodenal Switch is the name, I PM'ed you also. Sherry

A DS is a duodenal switch.  Basically, a banana shaped sleeve is made out of your stomach, leaving the pyloric valve in-tact. (No dumping, or so they say.)  Then you're intestines are rerouted a la RNY only in a different way.  You can learn more by going to www.duodenalswitch.com or the DS forum here.  Weight loss results are excellent, but you have to be uber-vigilant with supplements... more so than with an RNY or Lap-Band.
